Need some help.

Please dont flame me for this because I was never taught this.
My cobalt is auto but when shifting like Park, Revere, etc. So its like P, R, N, D, 1, 2

What are the 1 and 2 for?
Explain please.

Also is it bad if I was driving. Stopped. Put it in 1 and then started driving and shifted to D lol?

no that is 1st and 2nd gear.

Wont hurt the transmission to shift like that UNLESS if you make a habit of downshifting that way. Upshifting like that is not a problem but downshifting is going to wear it alot faster

^^When dragging/racing....Start in 1 and move up instead of D...It will turn of your traction control and you will get a better launch cause it wont limit the rpms....

Thats what I first thought that it was for racing. Thanks.

One more thing though if I shift up do I just keep on the gas or do I have to release the gas and then shift?

Do not rev the engine in first with the break held down...it's an incorrect launch and will mess your tranny up....if you want to launch, which is what Im gathering... drop it into N, rev to 2500 rpms with break held down until sinks under your foot...than put the car in D and rev to 2000-2300 rpms and when the light goes green come up off the break...thats a correct launch in a automatic...do NOT over rev the engine past 2300 on launches in a auto...you will again mess your car up

So let me get this right.

Im at a red light.
I put it in neutral and stay on brake.
Time it the light so when the opposite like turns yellow I start to rev with my foot on brake and then when I hit 2500 rpms with brake applied still shift to D and rev at 2000-2300.

Will get my homework done now and when my parents go to sleep I might go out and practice a bit lol.

Do NOT shift the car into Drive with the engine revved. This is called a neutral drop and although once won't grenade the trans, over time you will see damage. You're better off just holding the brake while giving it gas just before you go, although this isn't great for the trans either as it generates extra heat.

Its kinda pointless to try and launch an auto Cobalt to be honest. You'd be hurting stuff and still be slow as molasses. To each his own though, maybe someone else can chime in.

Yea DO NOT drop your car into gear if you have it revved up.. THAT IS A BIG BIG BIG NO NO!!!!!!!!!

Just keep it in drive and rev it to bout 2k and launch like that.. while it isnt good for the tranny if you dont do it often it wont be too terrible.. neutral drop will tear your tranny up much faster.
