I dont know if this has been asked before but I was thinking of at my next oil change switching from castrol GTX to Quaker state Q but my question is which one of the Q's would be the best, they have High RPM, Advanced engine, max horsepower, and a few others and I want to know what you all think would be the best out of them or would I be best with just the plain old Q. Also do I need to do anything before switching to synthetic from conventional, I'm at 23,000 miles so I've done all but the first two myself fram filters and the GTX every 3000 miles. Any advice ladies and gents?

i dont know any of that other stuff, but on my other car i didnt have to do anything when switching from regular to synthetic. just make sure you've got as much oil out as you can. just to be safe

Doesn't matter, you can go with Walmart store brand if you want...

Just make sure the service grade matches what the owners manual says, or better...I think its SJ grade...look for the starburst on the oil container with the grade.

Just go with the cheapest you can that meets the service grade from a reputable retailer...like Walmart.

If you had an SC, it would have to be synthetic, however...

 

Why does the sc HAVE to be synthetic, mobil 1 specifically, but the other cobalts can just use walmart brand oil does the 2.2/2.4 not deserve the protection of synthetic like the 2.0 does.

 

Just go with Mobil1. ITs the best you can get, completly synthetic and will help your engine last longer. I Switched at 3k and never turned back!

 

The 2.0 engine is run under higher stress from boost. The synthetic oil can take higher temps created in the head of a forced induction engine.

The 2.2/2.4 can definitely benefit from the increased flashpoint, greater protection from breakdown and extended change intervals that synthetic has to offer. The 2.0 SC doesn't have to run Mobil 1 so long as a high quality synthetic is used.

The Q full synthetic is 40-50 cents a quart cheaper so thats $2.50 cheaper a oil change for a basicly similar product.

 

Royal Purple for me, and I just have the 2.2 sedan

 

mobil 1 in everything that takes motor oil.

 

man if i didn't have to run synthetic i'd be running pennsoil. oil's oil for the most part as long as it meets the requirements of the manufacturer. but since i have to run synthetic i do believe i'm going to be using royal purple after my first free oil change.

 

I wanna use royal, but adding dyes to oil(giving its purple color) has me a bit skeptical...i guess ill just stop being a puss lol

 

I just switched over to Royal Purple and I love it! I've got the Purple Craze! lol

 

I run the Q Advanced Full Synthetic and it is great

 

Royal Purple tends to break down a lot quicker than Mobil1. And with the price of oil Mobil1 is cheaper for oil. Like 21 bucks at walmart for a 5 qt. jug.

 

Mobil 1 hands down is the BEST oil you can buy with out going to AMSOIL or other super expensive sutff. I mean come on, if they use Mobil 1 products on the flippin space station, you know its some good stuff. Just because its 30-50 cents cheaper doesn't mean you should buy it....its worth the extra few cents....In a 2.2L, you wouldn't have to change it for quite some time, easily 5,000 miles, unless you beat it. Changing your oil every 3,000 miles these days is sooo not necessary. For for god sakes, STAY AWAY from the FRAM oil filter...Use either AC DELCO, PUROLATER, or WIX. They have the best flow rate and filtering efficency. With a FRAM, your oil pump works too hard to push the oil through the dense paper filter element.

 

^^Really, I thought Fram would have been a good filter.

 

That's what most poeple think...its not that bad, but if you do your research...you will find that the paper in the Fram is much denser which creates additional oil pressure. It filters fairly well, but again, look at its price! Just because its the most widely available and cheapest doesn't mean its the best!

 

Walmart has Pennzoil Platnium full synthetic for $3.xx a quart. i checked the back it complies with the requirements to keep everything under warranty!!!
