Why don't you just build the head that came on the car? Get some cams, full valvetrain and port and polish it if you want to.

Find a local pick'n'pull or junk yard and pick up a spare head for cheap, then build that one as time and budget permits:

There's many ways to do it and still have a car to drive. Like Edubs said go to a junk yard and pick a spare one up to work on.

You can get an entire core engine for $500. The head alone for that price is about right.

GMPP makes a street CNC head for the car. It is bare, and you would need to buy the valve train separately. That would be nice but expensive.

However, having a machine shop tear down and clean up a core will probably cost about the same.

The difference (this is important, pay attention) is that the stock head is lost-foam cast, while the GMPP one is sand cast, like the LSJ and LNF heads. So the GMPP one is probably the way to go.

A quality head (everything, valve train, machine work, everything) is going to end up costing you about $1500 to start.

$253 sounds in the right ballpark. Ask around on here some people might have buddies that will sell then cheaper.
