Question about 2.2 Turbo
Ever since going to the dealership i have been thinkin of nothing other then what im going to do with this car . I really dont think i will be doing anything to void the warranty for a long time but i would like to ask my questions now about turbocharging it so i have a better idea on whether i should save up to buy the factory S/C they will bring out and keep my warranty or go N/A untill the warranty is up and Turbo it.
Now i know turbos make more heat and effect reliabilty. But what i would like to know is does it only effect it when your mashing the gas all the time or does it even ware more when ur just cruising along. I plan on just getting a stage 2 so that it comes with intercooler and all that good stuff. I do not plan on making this car a drag car just something that has more umph than expected. I will not be racing it all over the place (I do not plan too anyway but maybe i should wakeup to reality being only 19 lmao) But i just mainly want the turbo over the S/C for blow off valve and such. Im guessin a stage 2 would make it around a low 15/high 14 second car? Since stage 3 would make it 235 hp im guessing a stage 2 would be around 205-210? maybe a lil less. But to get to the question what im asking is... If i buy this stage 2 turbo have it professionaly installed and drive it as normal as possible and only gettin on it once in a great while will it greatly effect my reliablity and cause harmful heat? Thanks for any answers

well the turbo impeller is spun by exhaust, so natually the higher your engine is revving, the more and the faster the exhaust is going through the turbo. However just cruising along in 4th or 5th gear shouldn`t not generate too much heat. by the way congrats on owning a cobalt!

Sounds good. Thanks for the quick responses. Maybe ill put it on when im about 30k mileage or so. Ya these cobalts actually took me by surprise. I used to have a 90 integra ls and i thought i was in something respectful. How dumb was i? lmao These Cobalts will get 110% more respect then that integra ever will

What is the worst thing that could happen putting a 6 psi turbo on the engine?? Is 6 psi even enough to give it any trouble? Now that i seen that Moss report thing i am realllly thinking about puttin the turbo on it before the warranty is over. I am just curious as to what The worst can happen running 6 psi. Thanks

as long as you dont turn the car off as soon as you park and change the fluids at reccomended times or sooner and have it tuned well then you will have no problems from it

It helps with longevity (sp?) since your turbo is hot when your driving, letting it idle for a min. will help it cool down slowly to help avoid warp and more stress on the turbo.

I'm old school
To expand on that, you can purchase a device called a "turbo timer". Its an electronic thing that when installed, keeps your car running for a couple minutes after you physically turn off the key and remove it from the car. You can lock the car and walk away and the car keeps running at idle for just a couple minutes to allow the turbo to cool off.

halfcent is right. most people think all that is for high boost setups. But if u get the right parts, your turbo will be incredibly dependable. a good turbo like garrett, greddy, or even turbonetics are usually dependable.waste gates and blow offs need to be decent to deal with excess pressure. An oil cooling system is a good idea to keep things cooler. And an intercooler with turbo timer will wrap it up. All this can be really expensive thats why its usually only used in high boost cars. FYI: my 91 SAAB made 230 horses off boost and has all this without the turbo timer and it still uses the factory garrett turbo without being overhualed or new turbine kit.

turbo timers will work but are mostly for people who are too lazy to let the car sit for 30 seconds to cool down but if youve got the money to throw away on it then its your call
