Raiden8816's Hybrid Ecotec Build Thread

Decided to make yet another build thread!

Two years after being supercharged, my L61 decided that it's time to call it quits. With roughly 800 miles until it hit the 100K club.

I was having some festivities with an Evo 8 on Saturday (02.02.13) and was winning by a car and a half then she went pop.

After taking a closer look today (02.04.13) it seems like the #1 rod broke in half and took out my oil pan along with a nice portion of the block.

Below is the damage.

The current plan is to get a 2006 LE5 with forged internals to use as the long block and piston/rod combo. Then we will use the L61 head and bolt her back up with a nice crank trigger to make it all work and play nicely with the M62.

My current setup before the supernova going pop.

- Eaton M62 w/ smoothflow pulley 2.9
- Siemens 80lb fuel injectors
- RAW 3" CAI
- OBX 2.25" Header/Downpipe combo
- Custom 2.5" Mandrel-bend exhaust piping
- Dual-Pass w/ Option B tank
- Stock LSJ heat exchanger
- Magnaflow muffler

Once she is back together I will push the LE5/L61 harder in trying to break the 250HP limit that GM put on the rod rating for the L61.

Atleast it's easier to do oil changes now

I like this idea. Love pushing things past their limits

What kind of Hp do you think you were pushing before she took a pop on you?

Not sure on how much HP I pushed. I was under the assumption that I was in the 230 range, trying to be conservative against GM's 250 mark. Guess I was wrong.

Usually people break the rings and things are simple. Mine just had to ride the rebel bus and blow a hole in the block lol.

As for cooling, I had a dual-pass with option b tank. I had the stock heat exchanger which is fine for the application. Even John Powell doesn't use front mounted heat exchanger since the stock is fine the way how it is.

Now if I had a Griffin, well that would be another story

I was in the process of getting a ZZP 3" DP off a member here plus ordering a bad mab header with taxes along with a Tjin carbon trunk. Now I have to worry about the engine.

But my friend is gonna let me borrow his stock LSJ H/D to mock with the engine until I get the proper parts during the build.

Correct, john uses a griffen instead. One day I would like to as well.

Nope.

Im on a 2.8 pulley with ported blower still on stock motor. I welded my clutches together in the auto trans.

Interesting it popped.

Sad the motor popped bro. But I'm excited to build the hybrid for you and pull the old motor and see what happened.

Last I left the car his afrs were low to mid 11's and iats were 120ish after 2 back to back pulls in 65* ambient. I gotta check his logs to see where timing was.

This would be a good time to put those 80s to use and finally run some E!

I 100% agree. The motor will love life more with it as well. Don't have to get aggressive with timing but will be a great knock suppression considering the high compression.

Updated pics since the teardown.

First assumption was incorrect about #1 being destroyed. What actually happened is that the ring blew on #2 which also lead to the rod of #2 being snapped in half. Since the car blew up around 3,000 RPM the half-broken rod basically buzz sawed the block in half. It also destroyed both neutral balance shafts and also snapped my heat exchanger pump bracket

The good news is that the head is in perfect condition along with the valve springs, rockers, etc. So the most important part of the hybrid is ok for the swap.

The piston was actually sideways like a boxter engine when it was still inside the cylinder.

On a positive note since I doubt any junkyard would do a core exchange on destroyed engine block, I will make a table out of it!

I got a fully built motor for sale if you interested. Check out my for sale thread. I'm willing to part out the block from the head.
