STS remote mount turbo

I left for deployment over a month ago. My uncle sent me an eamil asking for the address of where my car was at. I asked him why he wanted to know that and he said I'm working on something for your car.

Well a week later I got another email from him saying that he has the car back in michigan. I started freaking out on him, and then he told me what he was up too. He took the car to his personal mechanics that built his 1960's panel truck with a 502 on nitrous.

Turns out they are currrently fitting the car w/ the remote mount turbo system. He asked me what i wanted to use for fuel control and i told him that i already have the AEM f/ic but i have it with me on the ship (i brought it with me to mess with becuase the USB port supplies the power to the AEM f/ic). I told him to just fit it and then drive the car back down to VA for me and i would have a local shop re install it and stuff.

Well i got another email from my uncle. The are done bending the charge piping and cutting a hole into the trunk where the air filter is going to be housed at. Right now they are putting in shark gill style vents that go into the trunk. They are using HYDRA shield material to filter the water from being drawn into the trunk. The "shark gills" are right up above the back tire where the rear bumper meets the metal rear 1/4 panel. They put in a plastic duct to carry the air into the turnk to the filter.

He has told me that rear bumper is going into the paint shop next week. All that is left is tapping the Oil fill cap on the valve cover and adding in the oil tapper that tapps into where our oil filter is at. He has mounted the oil pump and ran the oil feed and return lines.

My uncle told me all ill have to do is take the car to a shop and they will cut down the mufflers i have in the back and weld in the turbo, have them tap the oil filler cap and finish hooking up the oil filter tap and re run the charge piping.

A shop near me has acess to the 2.2L ecotec Venom intake manifold. A different shop is going to be doing the work and i will be having them set the boost to 14psi and tune the AEM f/ic for that.

I'll keep you guys updated on when the car gets back to VA. Even when the car gets back to VA i will still be on deployment. The shops wont be doing the work till i get back. But hey, at least i have the long hard part that will be finished and it will just be installation left for the shops near my house.

even on a remote mount system, you don't need to worry about lag if you size the turbo properly. One of the benifits are that you don't have to worry about an intercooler all the time, because of the length of the charge pipe, it'll cool it self due to the length, therefor you can prevent the pressure loss of an intercooler.

the sts is really geniuos in how they've moved the turbo to a cooler area and at the same time allowed for it to breath easier and provide a cooler charge as well. even if lag is a concern you can always spray a 35 or 50 shot at 2800rpm to spool it up. yeah i know they say don't spray below 3000rpm but my setups running fine and i've run quite a few passes on it.

^ the set up looks similar to this. except since im using the AEM f/ic i wont have a 5th injector. I'll have 60lb injectors since the AEM f/ic controls pulse width. Also i have a dual exhaust set up. Se the waste gate pipe next to the exhaust tail, my uncle is re routing the waste gate pipe over to the other side of the car so it will continue to have the "dual" exhaust apearance.

LOL this is by no means free, just the labor is free. I have to pay him for the turbo by xmas.

Regardless of being free or not man...you still get free labor and one hell of a unique turbo setup.

+rep for you bro...and 100000000+rep to your uncle!

But now, all i have to do is come back take it to a shop and in about probably a week have a car that might have 320-340 whp. im hoping thats what i will get out of it. we will see.

Don't know if it's really an issue, ever consider a bump guard around the turbo? Probably isn't the lowest point on the car, but you never can be too carefull.

i thought of that. its not too low to hit a bump. the problem is water splashing up on it. i have the HT's on my ship rigging up a weather splash guard so to speak to keep it from rusting faster then it should

I wouldn't worry about it rusting so much as cracking. If you get that turbo hot enough drivin around and go through a puddle... it could very well crack the trubo housing
