Turboing the 2.2
Turboing the 2.2
hey im new to this site and i was wondering a few things
Im working on getting my 2.2 cobalt turboed, and i want to build it right so i dont blow anything up haha.
A few questions i have and any answers will be helpfull
I need to drop the compression so will 2.0 sc pistons work in the 2.2 or any cams ect? if not what can i get to drop it for the turbo
Is there anything to get rid of my 108mph govener yet?
and will the 2.0 tach mph cluster work in the 2.2?
And my final question do you guys recommend anything to help me with this project in the making

There is currently no tuning available for the 2.2L ecotec. So if you want to go turbo, you will have to run a piggyback system. As far as pistons go, you can get some 8.9:1 that are for the 2.2L.
Check TurboTechRacing in the Vendor Index section for cams.

cool thanks, how would i go about a piggyback system? never did/tried that in my life. Thanks for the information guys, one thing my friend brought up, would the 2.0 fit into my car(with ecu swap) or would i have to to change almost everything?
well dropping a 2.0 into your car is changing everything. and probably more expensive than buying a used 2.0
but if you check out Garret our Alpine they both have turbo setups for our car, just go to their site and search. as far as piggyback i believe they run an SMT 6. if you don't know about or what that stuff is your going to need to brush up on it. do a lot of research. peicing together your own turbo kit is not something you just do without proper planning, patience, money, and time.
good luck! and welcome to the site.

Right now the only reasonable option is a custom turbo build and a F.A.S.T. XFI computer; with maybe MSD ignition. With these don't expect to pass car inspections. I don't know PA's laws, so I'd look into it if I were you. We don't have any issues like that were I live.
The top speed is discussed in a lot of forums. I'm not sure how much here, but I know at other cobalt sites it's a topic killed a thousand times. Search around.
Engine modifications are easy to come by, although hard on the wallet. Wiseco offers a variety of options. A lot of other parts can be found @ crateenginedepot + cobaltperformanceparts.com. You can consult the L61 build book for more information.
Once home tuning software becomes available I'm sure you'll see kit after kit getting released.

Pa laws where im from butler county are very....let me say you can get away with alot lol, i plan on doing a custom build im getting free off a friend a srt-4 neon turbo set-up, i was gonna use the turbo and intercooler on that with my car, the only problem that i see that i will have is tuning, or theres also just buying the ss/sc and getting a stage2 or 3 setup and call it a day lol, i love my 2.2 but the only thing i hate is a govenor....i never heard of one on a manual....
do a search for the info. the buttons at the top. many threads have been posted about this but ill give you the jist nonetheless. no tuning and the 2.0 pistons will not work. there are many engine internals already on the market for our cars. prep the car and wait for the tunning to boost up unless you wanna run the SMT6 until the real tuning comes out. good luck!
Also, if you need the PCM pinout, let us know.

The only difference is that the auto needs different charge piping run for the intercooler, thats if you even go with one.
Also you dont have to buy wiseco pistons. Diamond Racing makes 9.5:1 pistons for the L61 for $371. You can get custom ones made at any compression you want for $480. I was gonna go with 10.5:1, .5 higher then stock, so that i wouldnt need as much boost to get to my power goal. If you get a nice head gasket and ARP Head Studs, you can run a higher compression no problem. and make more power with less boost.
Go custom. start off easy with a non-intercooled setup. Look at the pictures for LewiSS' setup. He goes right from the turbo, over into the TB. And his intake temps are just as cool as mine and i have an intercooler. Tune the car with either a 5th injector setup or 4 42lb injectors and you will be set for awhile. dont go over 8psi non-intercooled though. learn how to tune it and then go to the next step. which would be maybe 10-15psi and an intercooler.

As Halfcent said, searching the 2.2 forums for Turbo should turn up about 300,000,000 threads for you to reference:

I don't know how well a piggyback unit will control such large injectors. Remember, you are varying voltage from stock settings. Stock is used to controlling 24 # injectors, not 42 #. That's double the injector size. Also, 42# injectors on a MILD turbo build is way oversizing.
Also, saying PSI and not mentioning what possible size turbocharger he'd be using isn't really saying much.
Just wanted to clarify a bit.

From how Diamand Racing has been SLOWWWWWWLY producing pistons for the LSJ guys, I would lean more on the Wiseco pistons cause they are more readily available...of course this includes the idea that if you're ready at that moment to purchase them.

But the piggyback never ran the stock injectors. in my setup they just run the 1 5th injector. It can run up to 16 injectors simultaniously. doesnt matter the size, you just specify the pulse from 0 - 100 %.
Whoops, i forgot to mention turbo size =P
I was saying as a actual piggyback unit, not as a extra injector setup.
