Universal piggybacks and standalones.

Has anyone besides blackoutss06 using a universal computer for their 2.2 such as the SAFC or megasquirt or anything along those lines?

I have an ecu pinout for the 05 2.2's if any of you guys want it, came from the online FSM info gimmick. I gave it to someone on here already to use, haven't heard back from him if he installed the SAFC2 yet though.

No one can honestly answer that for you.

If you really want to find out, install it, take it to a dyno shop and have them tune it for you. They'll be able to tune according to your a/f ratio. They have a wideband piece that most dyno shops put into your exhaust tip to read your a/f ratio.

Just curious cuz idk...but how does a dyno tune work on cars w/ no ecu solutions...i was under the impression that there was no way to adjust the ecu...can this be done on the 2.2's w/ a dyno and WB A/F?

There are solutions out there but it's not "plug and play" like people would like. It involves wiring. An SAFC 2 MIGHT work, no one has really tried it yet but that's one simple piggyback that you could use. E-manage might work as well. Both claim to be truely "universal" so untill someone actually does it on the Cobalts and gets a result than we won't really know for sure.

If you were really serious, you could invest in an Standalone unit like Megasquirt or AEM EMS.

And yes, it can be done with a dyno and wideband...at dyno tuning shops, they have a wideband to put in your exhaust system so you don't necessarily need to buy one.

You're thinking in the wrong idea of "HP gains". You get an SAFC because you have an unbalanced or slightly unbalanced a/f ratio that needs a tuning. Yes tuning it may gain you some power by changing the amount of fuel being seen in your motor, whether if you need more or less. An tuning device is for NEED and not just to have. If you know that your car needs tuning cause you're running rich or lean, an SAFC might be what you need and will help you.

If you have no idea what you're running or plan on buying one and not tuning it correctly by taking it to a dyno or using a wideband, than don't buy one.

o yea i understand that, Im 99% sure its very rich. How ever there is no turbo or supercharger in the near future so i waiting. I have been playing with my friends SRT-4 we put the safc-neo in his b/c he is WAY rich from 3500+ he actually stopped making power at like 3800! We got his dyno-tuned and it sucked, way too rich loss of power bad.

it is universal and gains are not that great....claimed at 15-20 but more like 10-12 if that....gonna take it out i think...cant use w/ n2o anyway so im just gonna get HP tune when they come out

I highly highly highly highly suggest that

Adam's dead on. driving a car that's tuned right, as opposed to one that's all over the place feels a lot smoother and different, even if there's only a 3-5whp gain. you're going to get to a point where it's needed anyway, so the ability to do it helps, a lot.

I'm suprised nobody has brought up the street tune vs. dyno tune debate yet. if you wanted a rough tune, you could buy a wideband and a a/f controller and get a ballpark range dialed in, and then fine tune it on a roller. I'd suggest a mustang or dynapack over a dynojet but that's just me, and a lot of others lol

In the build book it lists DFI-7, AEM-EMS, PECTEL T-10 and Motec as computer control engine management devices.
