get a lighter flywheel..... if it feels long going into the gears, a short shifter would be a good idea too, big help for minimum cost.... prolly the one thing i should have gotten for my old cavalier.....

lighter flywheel will hlep it spin faster but will decrease spin down time due to less rotating mass so less slowing force??? and short throws = bad

i dont feel liek diggin up the old thread so ill sum it up real fast, when you shorten the throw, you increase the amount of force that the syncros engage with, specially when you rip through the gears. This abuse to the syncros will cause to wear quicker then a normal shifter.

No because it was specifically designed to mate with our tranny.

How long do you plan on keeping your car? i've known several owners with a short throw shifter and no problems with syncros... unless you drive like a freaking moron every day you won't see anything come about on the car until like 10 years down the road..

I've seen people lose syncros 5-6 years range. Its happened to multiple people I know so that why I advise against them. Everyone is free to do as they please I'm just trying to save someone some money.

I e-mailed TWM Performance about their short shifters and shortening the life of the synchros...hopefully we will get an answer back soon straight from the horses mouth.

I received a reply back from TWM...take it for what its worth

Hello Jerry,

Thank you for your inquiry. This is one of the most inaccurate myths
present in the aftermarket industry today. A short shifter is in no way
damaging to the transmission or any related components. It is worth
mentioning, however, that there is a period of time after a shifter is
installed where some care is required in order to become acclimatized
to
the new part.

After a short shifter has been installed the time it takes to shift is
reduced and the timing between your hand and your clutch foot must be
adjusted. Some people install a short shifter and immediately proceed
to
shift as quickly and as hard as possible. We recommend that all of our
customers take several days to become accustomed to the new shifter
before
they try any high-rev shifts or faster shifting. Once the timing for
the
new shifter has been adjusted there shouldn't be any problems shifting
the
car in any circumstances.

I hope this helps. If you would like to purchase the shifter it can be
found here:
http://www.twmperformance.com/shorts...rtshifters.htm

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kevin

well what TWM says makes alot of sense as I personally do not see how shifter length could add/release stress on the syncros

if it all it did was change shifter length, u could just cut it down fro free, but they change the shifter lever ratio which = moe force

no, what they are doing is extending the rod length so that the throws between gears are actually shorter. Although shortening the top of the shifter makes the shifter lower the extending of the rod at the bottom is what is actually shortening the throw.

if you just cut the stock shifter down you will not have the same effect.

I plan on going with the lightweight flywheel in the future. right now I have the short throw from TWM and I have to say, applause the TWM. They did very well on instructions and building the part, I love it. It did take time to get used to it though. the first day i had it in, i grinded 2nd and 3rd every now and then, but now its perfect. When done correctly, i have no time between the gears and people outside the car have asked if its an auto.
