Cleaning MAF.. Question..

Hey,

How do you properly clean the MAF? I have a shifting issue, and I was told to try and clean it. It's inside an Injen CAI, so it's quite easy to get to. Just un-do the 2 bolts and wipe it down with parts cleaner or something? Do I just have to clean the part that sticks inside the tube or is there more? Do I have to do it with the engine cold, or is warm fine too?

Thanks guys..

I think there is a product called MAF cleaner that you use. I think it come in a spray can.

The factory service manual doesn't describe how to clean the MAF. Keep in mind that the only thing to clean is the heating element - do not soak the MAF in anything! The MAF works by sensing how much voltage is required to keep the heating element at a certain temperature. Oil can insulate the heating element and make it slow to respond to airflow changes while water does the opposite -- makes it respond too quick/incorrectly.

Whatever you do don't clean it with gas. Do that and you'll need a new one.

So just un-do the two bolts, pull it out, and spray it down with the stuff..?

Does it have to be cool or can I do it at running temp..?

So I spent the 8 bucks on that stuff and there's no difference in the shifts. They're still hard and the initial shift lurches like crazy. I swear I have to be slowly breaking something..

it doesnt matter if the engine is warm or cold when you clean it. just let it air dry before you put it back in.

Have you looked for any codes stored -- gotten your OBD II scanned?

Yup, and all it says is 02 sensor related stuff from getting the cat replaced. I ran catless for a few days. I guess I'll just have to go to the dealer because nothing else is working..
