Does your 2.4L run hot?
Only 2.4L owners answer please.
My commute home takes me on Deeroot Trail. This is a provincal highway which goes through Calgary. Spped limit 100km/h but going home its rush hour. Its generally a crawl most of the way.
Speeds vary from 5-25mph and there is the occasional stop but this is very short 10-20 seconds.
Last two days the air temp has been 61-66F (16-19C) and my car would run over 200F--even getting as high as 217!
I have never had a car run so warm. After getting up to almost the speed limit, after a minute or tow it would drop down between 195-205.
Anyone has a 2.4L that runs so hot?

I think having the digital readout is fooling you. Most cars come with 180-195 degree thermostats. If you are in traffic with no airflow through the rad, it will go up and go up quickly.
I'm pretty sure the DIC will flash a warning if it's actually too hot.
Can you hear your cooling fan come on when it gets hot? It probably comes on about 220 or so to cool things down.
Best thing to do is call the dealer and ask what temperature the fan should come on at. The next time it reaches that temp, if it doesn't come on, go see them.

I cannot hear the fan coming on at all. Only time the temp goes down is wehn I pick up a little speed and sustain it. Haven't hit 220 yet but I am sure I will.
I have had lots of V8s and a few 4 cly cars and none has run this hot.

Yeah, don't know about 2.4L, but my SS/SC ran pretty hot today. It usually sits around or just above 80 C when warmed up. But today, idling in traffic it went up to about 100 C, then droped to just below 90 C when I started driving and got some air in her.
This is my first summer with the car, so that is probably just normal for these cars.

I got the 2.4 coupe, and i sit in traffic daily, going from downtown pittsburgh to the south hills on Rt. 51 every day... stop and go... sometimes sitting there for 20 minutes idling... and yes, it gets up to roughly 215F as the highest so far. Usually I am running 190-198 when im not in traffic though, I guess a 10-15 degree increase sitting idle on a hot day is the norm.

Mine can run to 205+ when sitting in traffic... but I pulled the engine cover off and that drops the temperature by 5 degrees... I've thought about getting a 180 degree constant temp thermostat... but I can't find any for the cobalt yet.
I think that's just the way this thing runs.... but definately take the engine cover off.

I know mine's not the 2.4, but I've gotten to 233 in traffic before. As long as it's liquid in there, you have no fear. Due to the pressure and coolant / water mix, you're protected to at least 260 degrees, assuming it's mixed right and still in good shape. After that it'll start to turn to steam, and you'll really be fucked.

During normal driving my car usually sits at 194 but during hot summer stop and go, it has gotten up to 228. The reason these new 4 bangers are running hot is for fuel economy reasons. If the enginge is hot it obviously isn't putting out it's peak power. Basically if it's running that hot, it's no big deal.

mine got up to 220 one day so i called the dealer and asked what the operating tempature was for my car he said between 212-222 so i guess its just our cars. I know its not over heating because my temp light doesnt come on. My bike sometimes gets to 220 also and its ok at that tempature no kind of light or anything.
