I worked for a trucking comp for two years as a mechanic and i learned how to do it in semi trucks. but that was for normal driving not going ***** to the wall.

RPM for the gear is more important then speed.. i used to drive truck up North building ICE roads in the oil patch and the guy I worked for insisted that the cluch was only for starting and stopping.. granted it is easyer to shift without the cluch in the big trucks but the principal is the same.. Just match the RPM for the gear you want and speed your going and it should just slide into gear just don't force it..

 

ive accidentally slipped into 2 a couple times without the clutch....what i hate is sometimes i get lazy when i shift and i let out before i get it into gear and it grinds for a second.....o well im feelin a G85 tranny

 

wow i hold at like 3500 n slam the go pedal perhaps my clutch will fall out but hey its all good

 

Shifting without the clutch isnt the best for our cars, but it can be done easily with no issues. In first, drive until you're at about 2.5K rpms, release the gas pedal. From there, before the rpms drop further, gently shift to second. As you go towards second, you'll feel resistance, but it will gently slide in with no issues around 2-2.3K rpms. I've done it all the way to 5th. If you're just cruising, its the same rpm for each gear when it changes. You'll feel when it wants to go as you put it into gear. You'll understand better if you've done it. I dopnt like it though, good or bad for the tranny, doesnt feel natural. As for the automatic, putting it into first DISABLES the traction control. I drove one just the other day and played with it. The SS model 4 door auto isnt bad at all

 

now my friend suggested that i red line it and when the light turns green let off the clutch. he said it would take off MUCH faster. i tried it and regret it. all i did was spin the **** out of my tires and my clutch feels like ****. 2 days later and my clutch is starting to feel a lil tighter

 

Is there any reason to actually put it into low gear with automatics? the other day the only way i could burnout was in low gear and it was raining outside. So any other tips on launching with an automatic

 

first gear in the auto's turns off traction control, but it does help you hold the revs longer. Other than that, there is no real tip for automatics to launch unless you have a specially made tranny that will allow you to drop it from N to D while revving. You'll just drop your tranny out of the car if you drop the gears like that with a regular one.

 

BTW In my 2001 Wrangler (4.0L I6 3 spd. auto) I could use first to hold the rev to redline after takeoff (auto's switch gears long before redline unless tuned) , then used second to go to 87 mph, and then switch to Drive to hit third. That was one quick wrangler though... i miss her... *sniff* but Im glad I got the Cobalt with the trade.

 

My car doesn't shift untill 6500 rpms, and if i put it in first i found out that burning out in low gear causes it to bounce off the rev limiter. Never doing that again

 

I can take mine to 6800-7000 rpms. I like it when the VVT kicks in at 4K
