Oh snap. Turbo or Super..??

Ok.. So I've been tossing around the idea lately of beginning to start collecting parts for a boost build.. Collect **** at a reasonable pace this year, then install it this time next year.. That way I'll be able to wait up for good deals..

I'm not worried about making some 500hp monster.. Basically, I'm just looking for a little bit more pull, and the whine/woosh from boost is pretty damn sweet too.. lol. I have a 2.4 auto. I basically want it to be similar to the feel of a Saab 9-3 2.0T set-up. Nothing insane, but still better than it is. I don't want to run insane amounts of psi or anything either. Just something stable so I can run it reliably. I use the car everyday as it is my daily driver.

I'm incised with the fact that the M62 supercharger swap is basically a tweaked bolt-on. That's nice. But I want to get options on a turbo too. Can I use parts from the Saab 2.0T or some other similar car to keep costs down? I know that some things like tubing and intercooler are basically all universal, but you need the 9-3 manifold and stuff to run it, correct? I'm mostly new to this. Several of my friends have turbo'd Hondas, so the install shouldn't be a big deal.

I'll have to go do a search for a turbo build, but I already have one saved for the M62 one.. Regardless, I want to hear some options from other 2.4 guys, especially those of you who have / are doing boost right now..

Thanks!!

Yeah. I'm not out to run with Ferrari's. lol. I just want to step it up a little, but still keep it fully DD friendly.. Probably even Stage it sooner or later.. lol

Did you just follow the s/c 2.4 walkthrough on here? How accurate is that list / build? I mean, if that list is 100% dead on, I'll just already know exactly what I need. But my luck something won't be on there.. lol

Yeah, I've seen both of them. Do you have to do that wiring thing? Did you use basically the same build list? I mean, I could always just follow both..

Supercharging is the cheaper way to go.

I have the hahn kit, and although its nice, not quite as dd friendly as i would like. Going to be redoing a good portion of the kit.

how isnt it mod friendly? Wouldnt you just need a turbo swap and a retune for more power?

The way it delivers fuel is..bogus.

Unless hahn hacked the tune and or the install,

Basically the car once it hits boost, for whatever reason, it tends to start dumping fuel in only in drive.

However in I / L, its fine.

The kit that Garrett Made is nice, the addons HAHN added...helped. Its enough to run a 13.3 on street tires with some skill / other mods, but its nothing worth bragging about as it stands.

It does make the car fun though.

Yeah i noticed my car is much more responsive in I than in D and tends not to have misfire issues.

all the saab 9-3 2.0 turbo parts are swappable to your 2.4....its the same engine (lsj) as the cobalt SS supercharged with a turbo slapped on it...i know cuz i own one as well as a ls/tc....so if your going to use the intake manifold from the saab that would be the best thing to do...or if by some chance you find a wrecked 08 cobalt ss (lnf)grab that manifold and you should be fine....

How many of the parts from the 9-3 can you use for the turbo build? I'm more of a fan of turbos..

See.. I don't have enough money to buy a complete kit.. It'd certainly be easier, however the funds aren't there.. Let's say I sourced the 9-3 turbo parts.. What else would I have to buy..? Is the turbo descent, or should I upgrade? It seems descent from what I can tell from driving them.. Also, is it intercooled? I'm not worried about that, because I can just buy an aftermarket intercooler.. Same for piping and intake and whatnot? 9-3 **** or aftermarket? As in, what will I benefit from collecting from a 9-3? I was planning on going aftermarket intake (already have one for my n/a, but I'll sell it when I go boost to get the intake for it), big loud ass BOV (lol), descent sized intercooler, and a turbo that is reliable. Again, I'm not worried about making 500hp.. But I do NEED the car to be reliable as it is my daily.. If I went this route, what do you think a descent ballpark price range COULD be..?? AND, dumb question but.. Is your car still legit for inspection with a turbo/supercharger added onto it? I didn't know if it messed with the emissions or overall testing in any way.. That's quite important too.. lol. How about my Cali guys? Are they asses about it out there about inspection with highly modified cars? I might be moving there in a year or so.. LASTLY.. Is there a turbo how-to build or even a list of necessary parts to buy? Can't seem to find one on here.. If not, would it be a similar list to turbo, let's say, a Civic?

Local guy has a kit for sale.. Is this a descent set-up..? The price seems pretty fair.. For a Cobalt 2.2/2.4..From listing:

Kit includes

All 2.25" intercooler piping ready to be put in, all custom bent and welded. Each pipe has the ends flared out for better clamping.
Intercooler w/ brackets to bolt to car
All couplers (blue) and hose clamps
42 lb injectors with harness
Blitz blow off valve
one large intake filter (red)
2 small filters (blue & red)
TE04H Mitsubishi turbo w/ internal wastegate set at 5psi
Custom dp w/ high flow cat and O2 bungs
Mid tube header
Oil feed and drain lines
intake piping
Vaccum lines

going supercharged would be cheaper if cost is that much of an issue. What power goals do you have in mind? 250whp or less, i would recommend going with the supercharger. If you want more like 300whp or more, i would say go the turbo route

Hunter, how's your car for inspection and what not? I might be moving out to your area in a year or so..

But yes, it'd be 250-ish. Just a mild-build. Stock components mostly. Maybe a couple basic s/c bolt ons..

So I should basically follow Becks s/c build listing of parts and that'll be basically like 98% of the stuff I need?

its not really emissions legal at the moment, but you dont need to take an emissions test until the car is 4 years old (so i wont need one until 2010) Im either gonna just tell them its a GM upgrade (since they sell a blower kit for the cavalier n all), and if i fail, i know of a couple shady emissions places that will pass you if you drop some cash their way (my auto class teacher for one)
becks list should have just about everythig. I cant say though, i didnt follow becks list. I already had most of my stuff before he even made his how-to
