Overdrive??
I lol'd at this thread. If you remove overdrive your removing 4th gear thus making your car slower and killing your gas mileage with it. If you really don't want it just put the car in I instead of D. Here is an article on overdrive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overdrive_(mechanics)
im not trying to remove it... alot of vehicles with overdrive have a bottun for turning it off for going up hills and ****... my way to and from work consists of 15 miles up and down hills... and i hate the car constantly downshifting
that is precisely what the lower gears are for on our car and why you can select them.
you can select the lower gears?? i'm sorry i'm dumb when it comes to auto, i've had manuel everytime b4 this... there is no 1 - 2 - D - N - R - P theres no numbers on mine... theres like a I and a L or something
first. know that i belive hunter89 made a good thread somewhere thats really detailed on the auto.
ok
let me begin.
It is impossible to do real damage with ur auto. even in L it will eventually shift to save your car.
L/1- will stay in 1st till 6k i belive. Also turns off TC
I/2-Tranny will shift at slightly higher than normal RPMs 1-2 with increased line pressure but traction control on. Overdrive Can be used in I.
Just dont go directly to L. GO D to I to L
yo can go Directly to drive anytime
its hard to explain. you need to get a feel for the car/tranny and most of all the engines power band which is a bit high in the RPM range

I cant think right now....
uhhh CSSnet.... does I allow overdrive???
I could have sworn i can slam down my gas in I and get overdrive to kick,
I know for a FACT thats true.
hehe

kay now, last Q , does it hurt the car driving with the I insted of D??
i just went and drove it useing the I option and i love it... but i dont wanna hurt the car... it didnt even rev up that high, just insted of shifting to OD, it stayed at like 3500 - 4000 rpm at like 55-60

^^Correct.
"I" is full automatic without OD. Your tranny will shift up 1-2-3 at slightly higher RPMs than in "D"...and down shift 3-2-1- automatically as you slow. Your gas mileage will go to "Heck" though simply because your engine will be revving higher than is necessary.
Think of it this way: "I" is not "2nd" in the Cobalt.

idc bout gas mileage, i just wanted to make sure i'm not going to burn out the tranny or nething, and i like how it downshifts aswell, sounds cool w/ a aftermarket exhaust
in my experience, using I will keep your RPMs around 3krpms when on the throttle, and above 1.5krpms when off the throttle. It will not go into overdrive. L will not shift from 1st to 2nd until redline, and will downshift to first if the RPMs will be above 4500, and downshift to 2nd (assuming you're going from D/I into L) if the RPMs will be above 5600 after the shifts
