Performance predictions

Any guesses on what kind of numbers the magazines will get? I am putting some mileage on the car and gradually increasing rpms. But haven't really got into it. 5000rpm once or twice.

Might be at the track in a week to see for myself. But back to the topic....

For a 5 speed car I predict:

0-60 in 7.2

1/4 mile 15.3@92

Thats way too low a trap speed at 85-86. Consider this:

My old POS 305 TBI/auto IROC ran 15.9@85. Weighs some 500lbs more. Virtually the same hp. Oh and it had no top end---just good low rom torque.

And my wifes Grand Am GT traps at 89mph

Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart (162hp,2.4L) did a 15.5@90. And it weighs a touch more.

mid 15's sounds about right for this car. My old SVT Focus had 170hp, but had tall gears and still managed mid 15's.

Mid to High 15s... depending on driver & track conditions... Maybe a low 15 ? I doubt it though...

yeah, it all depends on the driver, track conditions, elevation, and weather. still though, low 15's is very unlikely. mid 15's is pushing it so i'm guessing high 15's to low 16's. let us know what you run after you go.

I am surprised at all the high 15's guesses (VVT, 10.4 to1 CR---not an economy car engine you know)

Doesn't take much to get that these days----well I'll do my best to prove you wrong!

Yeah, I think a cobalt with 171HP is an easy low 15 second car. My modded alero and stock V6 camaro could run low 15's, this car will for sure.

yeah that 15.5 at 90 could just mean it spun the tires more at launch or the car doesn't pick up till its 3rd gear. 86-87 trap is about dead on for 15.5

that makes no sense. I have been drag racing for 13 years so I have some experince.

Your 86-87mph does not corelate. Look up some magazine road tests of 15-16 second times---you'll see the mph is higher.

Wifes Grand AM did 16.3@85

Friends 91 T/A 305 TPI/auto did 16.0 @87mph

Both these times are uncorrected. Physical atlitude where I live is 3200ft---BUT desnity altitude is around 5000ft!

Using NHRA correction factor (plus I have drag raced the same car here and at sea-level)
of 0.8 sec= 15.5 for the Grand Am 89mph
15.2 for the T/A 92mph

However---I'll be back with a timeslip and I am sure we'll see a magazine test soon.

Is this your predicition? because no car that can achieve a 7.2 0-60 would then become such a dog that it takes 16.2 to finish the quarter mile.

Tiburon GT V6 7.1 15.6
Lexus IS300 7.3 15.5
Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart 7.3 15.5
Sentra SE-R Spec V 7.3 15.6
Corolla XRS 7.2 15.8

On the other end

A4 1.8T 8.1 16.2
Cobalt LS 8.4 16.6
Pontiac G6 GT 7.9 16.1
Grand Prix GT2 8.1 16.2

sorry to hijack the thread , but i love the s/c , before my friends ss/sc would leave me in the dust , and now we are neck and neck , but as long as ive got the auto , and untill he learns to shift faster itll be a toss up , once he learns to shift faster he will win

What's funny is the 3.1L MPFI Turbo in the Grand Prix STE's (popular in 2nd gen Cavailer Swaps or the 3400 SFI) were putting the same numbers down stock for the 0-60 in 7 seconds and low to mid 15 quater miles. For the 2.4L VVT to do those same numbers with less displacement and naturally asperiated shows how far GM has gone since the early days of large displacement, small HP times of the 90's.

For once, a car that is good on gas and performance for those in minds with budgets.

My 1993 Cavalier Z24 on average will run 16.0-17.0 and even it hasn't ran slower than 85mph.

I was wondering

I remember when I free'd up the air flow on my 2003 Alero ecotec, I noticed a huge differnce (CAI/ Catback exhaust).

I was wondering, how well do you think the 2.4L Ecotec will respond to these mods? Do you think it has far better airflow to start with, or will it be similar.

I know the 2.2L was restrictive.

i was about to buy a ralliart, but i felt it was to slow and my gf said the same thing. then i drove the cobalt and we both felt it was a bit faster and actually looked good. so if they are getting a Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart to do 7.3 and run a 15.5 i'll say they get the Cobalt SS to run a 7.1 or 7.2 and 15.3. i've raced an RSX and a ralliart and we both knew it was a race and i took both. my car has 1600km on it after 12 days so i've already been giving it and the car pulls very nicely. actually!! i think the car will run a 7.3 and 15.5... the stock all season tires blow they need a nice summer tire.
