Quiet Mufflers..??

Hey guys,

So, I'm contemplating on either replacing the muffler and resonator on my GMPP or just going back to stock SS catback. My GMPP has high miles, and so the packing is non-existant anymore. I just want to quiet it down a bit. Is it worth it to keep the GMPP for the piping or just go back to stock? I know both systems are 2.5 inch, but is the GMPP tubing better? But if I should just replace the muffler and resonator on the GMPP, what would you suggest? I want it to be quiet. Not like Prius hybrid quiet, but basically stock SS. The only reason I really even want to do this opposed to just going back to stock is because of the better flow of the GMPP vs stock. Any suggestions? I'm stock header/dp and Injen CAI on my 2.4. But this isn't solely 2.4 related, hence the general post. An exhaust question is for everyone.

Thanks!

Some of us have the same questions. I've been looking for a solution since all of us have different opinions about what 'quiet' actually is.

I went from a GMPP catback/muffler to GMPP Catback with a Magnaflow muffler and it quieted it down a lot, but didn't make it stock-level quiet. I've heard that Dynomax mufflers are pretty quiet, though (quieter than the Magnaflows).

Yeah, I had a set of Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers on my Dads 04 Monte SS and it sounded really good. And definitely not loud. But I've also heard them on some cars that it sounded horrible..

Is the GMPP tubing really that superior to the stock SS stuff? Because if not, it'd seem far easier to simply just put the stock system on. I'm really not too concerned with overall power or performance anymore.. I just want to be able to hear myself think.. lol

The GMPP exhaust is 2.25" not 2.50". The piping is not really superior to the stock piping, both are mandrel bent. The improvements of the GMPP exhaust are in the resonator and muffler design.

I swear by Dynomax. Those mufflers have a really nice tone to them, and are extremely quiet. It almost sounds stock.

DYNOMAX Muffler vids

It's really quiet, you can really only hear the car if you have really loud blower whine like I do.

Do you swear by that concerning a 3" exhaust? Because that's what I'm dealing with. I've been considering that for a while, but I want to be sure.

And I guess I should have the same sig as you. I too am a busted sleeve club member.lol

Ralliartist, that sounds super good. Seriously. Is that just a stock SS exhaust with a simple cut-n-weld? Dynomax super-turbo?

Do you think the Thrush super-turbo will sound similar? I happen to have a new one in my garage.. lol

Even though I already have a Thrush in my garage, I think I'm gonna buy a Dynomax..

Were those exhaust clips simply a stock SS exhaust wit ha weld in muffler? It fits directly in place of the stock muffler with no other alterations, correct? I wanna have this be as cheap and easy of a process as possible.. I think I'll also get a resonated double-wall tip as well so that they can weld that on instead of the stock single wall tip..

being 3" ain't going to make it any louder. It's just going to make it deeper. I doubt you moved much more air than I did.

That's the Dynomax super-turbo muffler. But my exhaust consists of a pacesetter header, 2.5" catless downpipe, then the stock resonator and stock piping all the way back to the dynomax muffler.

It will fit directly in place of the stock muffler. I even reused the stock tip. but as I said before, the header/dp of my car was aftermarket and with no cat. They dynomax quieted the car down A LOT for having no cat. Best part about it is, I didn't sacrifice any performance. That muffler flows over 550cfm.

Just as an update, I went and got my exhaust worked on today.. It was gonna cost alot to reinstall my stock SS muffler and then weld in a Dynomax muffler.. SO, what I did was actually just replace the GMPP resonator with the stock SS one. The GMPP system has like 80k on it (if not more) and the GMPP resonator was actually dented on the front tip, and apparently both of those caused the system to drone horribly. The stock SS resonator helped ALOT. It's still not without drone, but it's like 75% better. I will likely still replace the GMPP muffler with the Dynomax (already purchased) come Spring, but for now, it's much better. Just letting you know for anyone with a drone issue..

I hope you're right bro(rallliartist). I'm going to order one now. I like to be able to have conversations when driving down the freeway like I used to do everyday.

Honestly man, the drone is WAY lower with the GMPP muffler with stock SS resonator. But yes, I plan on putting the Dynomax on come Spring as well..

As I mentioned before, I had a set of those Dynomax Super-Turbo mufflers on my Dad's Monte SS and they sounded fantastic. The one did eventually blow out, but not until like 80k miles and that's after several northern winters. You should be good. haha

well, I use one with a 2.5" inlet/outlet because I'm still using the stock piping from the resonator back. But since you are using a 3", you are going to want to find one with a 3" inlet/outlet. Mine is the side/side style.

These part numbers would probably work best:

17743
17665
17792
17770

You might want to measure the area back up underneath the rear of the car. I can't remember what part number I had exactly. But you want to make sure you don't get one that is too long.

I think you could at least get the 23" long one, which is part number 17792.

17673 has a center/center inlet and outlet. You want the side/side.

Be glad you don't get the ss/sc then lol. with no turbo in the way to quiet it down the ~60hp/cylinder, they get loud quick.

The original owner of my car put on a magnaflow straight through round can on the stock exhaust. It could get earsplitting under small overpasses. Sold it to a 2.4l and it was so much quieter in that car. I replaced it with a raptor (thrush) reverse flow. It cut the sound about in half, but after a year it has gotten alot louder again.

I put a dynomax long-can (24") super turbo on my 5.2l dakota and was fairly impressed that it kept the sound close to stock volume, but added a bit more muscle to the tone. Much better than my original "repair": cherry bomb reverse flow that didn't sound too good and blew out in 6mo.

So a week ago I picked up a dynomax 17747 along with the required intermediate piping and tip. Waiting for some warmer weather to tackle it.

from my experience with the stock piping a center/offset works best. Maybe even center/center, but an offset/offset would be way too much.

I used side/side or offset/offset and it fit perfect.
