If you're talking about an air filter, Its used to catch the dirt and its harder for water to get through.

If you're talking about the air filter, it's used to help trap dust and small particles and prevent them from getting into the engine. It's also used for throwing a check-engine light on demand. Some filters (like K&N) use oil, others (like AEM dryflow) are designed differently and don't use oil.

The oil in the oil filter... well, I hope that's self-explanatory

K&N's oiled filters allow for catching even the smallest of dirt particles in the oiled surface... people who don't know how to oil them properly have check engine light issues with them!

When you reoil the filter later on... just make sure to keep it a very light pink color as to not to over oil it!

It won't be necessary if the filter is designed to be used without oil. But if it is designed with oil then it's necessary.

Eh, I put one in and within 2 days I had a check engine light. Im pretty sure they come oiled and I never re-oiled it.

Yeah, the Cobalts are really touchy about the oiled filters. It's a fine line between enough oil to trap dirt and enough oil to throw a CEL. Most cars aren't so sensitive, so I think K&N puts a bit extra on.
