A couple of times now I've hit a "brick wall" when trying to shift (at high RPM's) from 1st to 2nd and less frequently, 2nd to 3rd. I only remember jamming the 2nd to 3rd shift once actually, but it was at the track and I blew a run as a result so it's a painful memory.

When this happens I never force it in, I back off, let the RPM's drop a bit and then gently slide it in. Kinda kills the momentum though, ya know?

Just wondering if there is a way to avoid this that does not include "not shifting at high RPM's". Will stiffening up the driveline with new mounts and/or inserts help? What about replacing the stock plastic shifter assembly with a short throw? Is it a problem with the tranny synchros? Anything else I can check?

How many other people run into this problem?

I'm thinking about a F35 swap next year so I'm not sure about the short throw. I don't want to buy one and then have to buy a different one in a year.

Same thing is happening to me i actually bent my linkage cables in the process. It sucks bad. Keeps getting worse.

 

got my mounts and t.b. never had a problem

 

There's a TSB on Pontiac Pursuits about this...I wonder if it's fixable.
