Im thinking about putting a stock cobalt ss shifter in my girlfriends ion 2.4. Is it even possible? also does anyone know if this would be beneficial? the throw in the ion is long as ****

I thought about doing it but you would need to custom make the pivoting cable clamps which isn't easy. But it can work.

It will NOT work. The shift bases are different and the cables for the 2.4 will not clip into the base from the ss. I'm sure it could be modified to work but not worth it imo. Better to just buy a twm shifter

There is only one hole that needs to be drilled for the base to work.

The base will bolt into the car fine, it's the problem with getting the cables snapped in place. They are offset in the bases for the f23 trans but side by side and farther forward in the base for the f35 trans. If someone took the time to engineer a way to secure the cables down it would work fine, but like I said just a bit of work. And yes I have tried this in my LT (not a 2.4 but the trans and shifter are the same.)

Like others said, unless you're comfortable with fabbing stuff up, go with the TWM.

The stock SS knob isn't really a weighted knob either. It has a little bit of weight to it, but nothing compared to a true weighted knob. Willing to bet it's lighter than the "regular" TWM knob. You'll also have the reverse lockout flopping around (the knob looks weird without it).

Also, the stock knob is pressed on. 99% sure the TWM knobs are screw-on. You're going to have to jerry rig some way to get the knob to stay on. If you really don't care for anything TWM has, you can get an after market knob from Sparco or MOMO or wherever, just as long as you know what diameter to buy.

I mean, if you're dead set on the stock knob, I'm sure you could find a way to make it work. But you're also not limited to the TWM knob either.
