Synthetic oil?

I now have almost 1000 km (600 miles) on my 06 SS and I am considering switching to synthetic oil. Is this a good idea?

If I'm not mistaken Your SS already has Synthetic in it. Is your car a SS/SC, Or Non-sc?

Synthetic definately wouldn't hurt our engines... infact you'd probably gain a few HP from it.
I plan to switch to full synthetic when I change my oil.

In addition I have been told that once you switch to synthetics you should not/can't switch back.

I recommend when you do, do all your own oil changes. I just got back from my dealership for an oil change. $86 and some odd change.....

wow, did you get raped! why would you go to the dealer for an oil change? Take it to a localshop that specializes in oil changes. I went to Jiffy Lube in my area and for a 6 quarts of non-synthetic 5w30 it was 28 bucks. But if i had go with the synthetic it would have been around 60$.

I'd wait until 2nd or 3rd oil change. Let the engine toitally break in first. I am going to go synthetic in a few months.

Or you could get your own oil and do it in about 30 minutes for half the price. I mean seriously do people not know how to change oil anymore?

I change my own oil. I don't trust shops to do it. One of my friends went in there, and they rounded off the plug when they put it back in... Morons used an air rachet...

I'm not gonna let someone who makes $5/hr touch my car for 15 minutes, especially the motor

the only problem with changing your own oil is.....where's the paper work to prove it.....unless you plan on keeping your car until you have it towed to the junk yard...it's really not that great of an idea. when you have maintainance paperwork to go along with your car when you sell it/trade it in, it makes the car value a little different. i bought my first car from someone who claimed to do an oil change every 3,000 miles on their own....well the car burned more oil than gas because they did probably about 2 oil changes in the enitre life of the car and the rings were frozen because of it......so all in all in a world like this today, don't trust anyone and the paperwork makes it that much better or hell i'd be doing my own as well

Totally false. Synthetic is the best oil money can buy, and it benefits any engine, old or new. You can switch to synthetic at any time, and you can switch back to conventional oil as well at any given point.

I'd wait until 2nd or 3rd oil change. Let the engine toitally break in first. I am going to go synthetic in a few months.
No need. You're car came with Mobil 1 Synthetic oil in it from the factory, therefore there is no need to "break it in" with regular oil. This holds true for any new engine, you can switch to synthetic at any time.

I recommend when you do, do all your own oil changes. I just got back from my dealership for an oil change. $86 and some odd change.....
Exactly. Dealerships rip you off when you have them use synthetic. It would only cost you about $28 if you do it yourself. Figure $20 for a 5-quart container of Mobil 1 from Walmart, $5 for the extra quart you'll need (SS S/C) and about $3 for an AC Delco oil filter from your local Auto Parts store.

Bandit2941......wesmanw02....Thanks for the update regarding switching to Synthetic oil from Conventional oil. Synthetic oil would be my preference and I will likely replace my conventional oil for the SS/nonSC at my first oil change.

I got screwed the first time I took my car to the dealer for an oil change (around $90). Now I buy the oil and the filter and bring it to them and they charge $10 for labor.

.
I see there is some confusion still. The 2.4L does not come with synthetic---no one said it did.
Remember we are in the 2.4L forum. I have the 2.4L and want to make sure the rings are seated---or whatever the rational is for wating to switch on a low milage engine.

Modern engines are built with such precision that the only thing that really needs to be broken in are the rings. That usually happens in 10 hours of run time. Switching to synthetic oil will reduce engine operating temperatures a few degrees as well as give a little more hp. It will also reduce engine wear and if flows better at colder temps than dino oil. I have about 1400 miles on my 06 and I'm switchin to Mobil 1 as soon as I get a chance.
