tranny flush

Whats up guys i got a quick question, I have been trying to figure out everywhere and on the site using search constantly what is the total amount of trans fluid the car will take off a complete flush with the machine. At like autozone and pepboys, napa all the computers say 12.9. At the dealer the answer i get is off the spill and fill which is 7.0 quarts and they said maybe a extra 3 quarts in the torque converter. I just want to know what the proper amount is and if someone has already done it. Doing it real soon please help anyone. Thanks, tom

If its any help... My Haynes manual that was for my previous car. ( grand am with the 4t45) It had the same transmission. It called for 7 qts (drain and refill) and 13 qts if it's completely dry including the torque converter.

dropping the pan is 8qts max. A flush with a machine, like a BG, will use whatever the machine states. For example BG machines use 16qts, and is a true full flush. Id recommend taking it somewhere to get a flush, dropping the pan at home isnt the best way

If you're going to do the drain and fill at home remember this tranny is a little difficult in that department...have to raise the car and have it running while you fill it with tranny fluid to the fill plug. DO NOT STOP the engine while doing this, only after the fill plug has been reinstalled.

i am having a friend use the proper flush machine. i am just going to put 13qts in the tranny because i looked up the tranny online and they say 13qts from dry. And i may add a little extra because of the cooler i am putting on.

did you install a new dry tranny? if no then you dont put anything in your tranny except whatever treatment chemical is used(if any)

Most flush machines use a certain amount of fluid and you fill the machine. If you have the option of picking how much you can use I would ALWAYS use more than the car holds, thats way you know its a full flush(think transfusion.....the machine only puts in the same that comes out(most of them anyway) so if you put in more than the trans holds it will "over" flush it, that way you know you have fresh fluid in it. This isnt really hard, follow the machines directions or have your friedn do the flush. be sure to add enough afterwards to account for the cooler.

i am just going to put in what fluid the tranny calls for. And i don't quite know how those machines work. I just assume to fill the machine to what your car requires which would be 13qt on a complete flush

i have done alot of 5 speed tranny's but this would be my first auto. so basically just buy enough that way the machine will have extra rather then less.

It all depends on the flush machine. Just follow the flush machine directions.
