Tranny Quandry...

Hey guys.

I actually did a search *gasp* just now for auto to manual on my 2.4 SS. Well first, let me bring you up to speed.

I bought the car with a stick because my mom was supposed to take it after my lease was done. But now I kinda want it. Plus, I've already started a few tiny mods, and more are on the way this spring and summer. But I really want a stick.

Back to the post... I really like the s/c's, but I already have a 2.4, and I will still for a few more years. Plus, insurance is probably noticible in the s/c. So what I looked at in the search area was auto to manual. It didn't give me too much besides that it was expensive due to the ECU. That's understandable.

Now, I'd like to keep it with the 2.4 engine. I know they sell the s/c engine as a crate, but it's not nescessary. I like the idea of the 2.4 motor with the VVT. BUT, if I buy the s/c crate motor, and crate tranny, would it make the swap easier? More or less a direct swap? Or honestly, in roundabout numbers, approximately how much would a manual swap run me, not including install? IE: tranny, ECU, etc. OR is it a situation like "You *******, buy an s/c when the time comes and shut the hell up." lol.

The reason I want to do the swap (either just tranny, or tranny and engine) is because I'll already have mods on my car, plus I keep my car immaculate. And I wouldn't want to start all over again... Or if it's honestly THAT much work, should I just look into shift kits and ECU tunes?

If you have any input (and not like "Dude, you're gay.", please post!! Thanks guys!!

Oh, also, I haven't really looked into it, but there seems to be a buzz surrounding the turbo *gasp* 2.4's. I was told that the turbo is actually better with the auto. Any input about the turbo with auto or manual?

Actually, they are right. I regreted getting the auto at first.(only one on the lot when I bought it) but now after the tune, the tranny is awsome. Can definitly shift faster than I can.

tranny tuning is good for a half second in the 1/4 mile. plus with a turbo kit which would be much cheaper than engine and tranny swaps the automatic holds boost between shifts so it is actually better than a 5 speed.

Yeah, I drove another members auto 2.4 over the summer. He had his shift points moved, and it was surely noticible. How much would that cost? Shift kit, ECU tune, whatever. Price ranges?

Engine tune? What would that 450 include? Like shift points, ECU tweaking? I've never really done anything like that before. I'd certainly like to learn more! Plus, having a dyno sheet would be neat.

I believe you're talking about mine. More than just shift points moved. I don't even think we moved the actual shift points much... we raised the redline, shift speed, and pressure. Took off all torque reduction and management. There was some PCM tuning in there too, but not much. We're going to take the car out sometime soon and do some more tuning on it. I'm sure if you're that interested in this, Dan can tune yours as well for a way smaller fee than the $450. PM me if you want to talk more about it.

I think SSFamilyWagon got his 2.4 tuned to shift @ like almost 7 grand. And with the stock SS SC injectors and a custom GM Part harness its supposed to be near 200Hp to the engine/crank.

My IDC numbers were nowhere near the limit. I can't see any 2.4 needing bigger injectors without extensive mods.

And my car shifts at 7200.

Honestly, talk to steve about the tuning. I am just going by what has been done as of now to SSFamily's car.

As a 2.4 auto owner, I've noticed what appears to be torque management in the shifting. When you did your tune, was there a lot of that programmed in, and what was the effect of eliminating it?

I'd have to go back and compare the files. I don't remember off the top of my head.

All I know is that the car pulls on the shifts now. I dropped some time in the 1/4 mile as well. I mean you can feel a little difference, but the 1/4 times speak for themselves.

I PM'd him and he said 150. I want to be clear on what that all fully includes, then all I gotta do is set up a time!

You should talk to him to see specifically what he'd tune on it. He'll explain what he's going to do on it.

I retract my statement. We logged it last night and I hit a max of 96% on the stock injectors. Granted that wasn't until up around 7300RPM, but still... a lot more than I originally thought. Hmph.
