What kind of gas??

I was at a gas station filling up my car and a guy comes up to me and said hey is that supercharged and i said yea. Then he started explaining to me that I'm suppose to fill it up with premium gas or else the supercharger will dry out faster and break... so i was wondering what is that right gas to use??

The lower octane (87 or 89) is supposed to hurt the cars performance and wont run as efficient as with 93 octane gas.

When I first bought my car they gave me a full tank of 87, it was hell. It was knocking like hell and I only got 200 miles to the tank. Fill with premium, better mileage and less detonation. Good luck with the Cobalt.

It wont really hurt it since the book says you can use either, but they recommend premium and if i had the sssc i would put it in.

You could hurt it eventually if you ever pulley or run a stage kit.

Umm forgive my mechanical liabilities , but how does the type of gas dry out the supercharger? I don't think the intake to the supercharger is connected to any part of the motor?

I know the gas octane has effects on the engine performance and the supercharger has effects on the engine performance but how does gas affect the supercharger? Just curious?

Your supercharger will be OK as long as you are using the correct blinker fluid.

Yeah the premium gas only prevents detonation. It really has nothing to do with the actual supercharger itself.

Did the guy work FOR the gas station? He probably gets paid to wait in the wings and tell young dudes in tuner cars that they should be running premium.

He works on commission.

the reason you fill up w/ premium on a boosted engine is otherwise you risk knock/detonation. Unless the ECM is calibrated such that it'll sense the lower grade gas and adjust for that (by pulling timing). If it does pull timing automatically, you will see about a 10hp decrease in power for every degree of timing pulled.

has absolutly nothing to do with the supercharger drying out. Premium gas ignites miliseconds faster than regular octane. Our engines are timed to the premium gas so using a different octane could cause pinging in your future. suck it up and buy the premo

Premium gas does not ignite faster - octane is an inhibitor; meaning it makes the gas HARDER to ignite. This is why you should use premium gas in high compression vehicles because it is harder to ignite the gas, which prevents knock.

The manual does state you can use 87 octane but that you will experience "loss of accelleration". This is due to the fact that the car will detect knock and pull timing. I would not recommend running 87 octane though - it just isn't a good idea because knock is always bad even if the computer adjusts for it. If you get stage 2 you must use premium gas and it is recommended if you use smaller then the 3.0 pulley that you should use 93 octane as well.
