2010 Cobalt SS/TC 290HP? & Up 2 date LNF Stage Kit info!

Ok.... Before everyone get's hell bent, and starts trying to tear me a new anus..

THIS IS probably JUST A RUMOR!

But I had a friend of mine who's father works over at the Ren Cen, look into any further news about the LNF stage kits and any possible info about the Cobalt before the Cruze comes out.

This is what he came back with for me.

He said that the LNF stage kit is supposed to become available sometime in 2009. He also said around 300hp, (Probably the 290hp LNF stage kit). He also said that he heard 2010MY is last model year for the "Cobalt SS Turbocharged" So July 09-July 2010. (didn't say anything about any other Cobalt models) And finally he said that he also heard that for the last MY of the Cobalt SS/TC the stage kit may actually come standard from the factory....

That is all...

* 310 lbs-ft
* "under $1000"
* includes a voucher for the tune
* includes 2 TMAP sensors to measure the new higher boost levels correctly
* will be available on all LNF powered cars at the time of release (Solstice GXP, Sky Redline,Cobbalt SS/TC, and HHR SS)
* 50 state legal

That won't be to the wheels. I suspect it will be making the same or a little less than the current tunes out there. I predict 270whp 300wtrq.

Yeah. That's not WHP. That's at the crank. I'm doing all the reading on it over on the Solstice forum. Yeah, it's not going to be making as much power compared to some other aftermarket tunes, however it will be factory warrantied. It'll be competitive cost wise, and labor is included in the price.

Also basically all this kit/tune does is crank boost up to 23psi or more. So with other bolt-ons and modifications I can see this kit being worth purchasing. But once the turbo swaps start becoming available this kit won't be compatible of course...

Pending confirmation on Paul's numbers, the 09's are already making a pretty healthy number to the crank...

I think if it wasn't for GM's current situation, the stage kits for the LNF's would have come out sooner. But it takes a while. Didn't it take about a year after the SS/SC's came out for the stage kits to come out? SS/SC launched spring of 2005 right? LSJ stage kits came out in spring of 06?

290hp & 310tq seem to be the magic #'s. These figures have surfaced from a bunch of different sources, and from what people have confirmed from their sources, and around what I heard from my source...

Also taken from the solsticeforum....

Quote:
"This message was released today by GM.

Subject: SPO - Bulletin ACC08-030 - LNF Turbo Upgrade Kits for Solstice, Sky and HHR

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, HUMMER, Pontiac (including MD) and Saturn

DESCRIPTION:

The new warranty labor operation code R9224 is to be used for warranty claims on all Turbo Upgrade Kit components for Solstice, Sky and HHR. This warranty code also includes HHR utilizing the Turbo Kit with an automatic transmission. This does not include SAAB products.

EFFECTIVE DATE:

Immediately

There was an email address attached and so I sent a message asking what this was. The reply stated this is an upgrade kit to take these vehicles to 290 hp and more information would be coming shortly."

It was already considered, and while it would make the Cobalt SS that much better of a car it'll never happen because adding an AWD drive train to the platform that the Cobalt is on would be too costly and it would result in a AWD Cobalt SS costing like 30k....

Also this is just what people are saying but they are thinking GM may make an official announcement on the LNF stage kit around the time of this years SEMA show.

But why would an AWD Cobalt not be in the range of the AWD Evo?

The point is would you pay over 30k for an AWD Cobalt? I wouldn't. And I don't think the majority of consumers would. GM knows this. Maybe a small percentage of enthusiasts like yourselves would be looking for a domestic competitor to the EVO and the STi, which would be great, but it would be such a smaller niche, probably even a smaller niche than the Cobalt SS/TC, that it probably wouldn't even be cost effective for GM.

Also the Cobalt's days are numbered, as well as its current platform. Once the Cruze on the updated delta platform comes, who knows maybe we could see an AWD Cruze Coupe SS? Probably unlikely. And the only car size wise in GM's lineup that does offer AWD is the Saab 9-3 which is riding on GM's aging Epsilon platform. And in 2010 the next gen 9-3 I believe is switching platforms. It's very unlikely that it would ever happen for the Cobalt.

290hp & 310ft lbs of torque are the #'s for the LNF stage kit.

Not the SS/TC naturally. We all know that the SS/TC is rated @ the crank 260hp & 260ft. lbs if torque. Obviously we're looking at probably ~20hp & ~20ft lbs torque to the wheels. I'm just assuming, I've never seen a stock SS/TC dyno's sheet.

And I read somewhere that GM is going to incorporate AWD into all Saab's. I've also heard that a new Cobalt could be in the works and ofer AWD in the SS trim because it would be sharing the platform. Also, a 6 speed manual would be offered. Here is a link to what I'm talking about.

That would be pretty sweet. I'm sure it's being considered. The fate of the Cobalt is really unknown to us at this point.

An AWD Cobalt SS turbo w 6spd transmission if it cost under 30k would be my next ride. IF GM was to ever come out with it. I can guarantee that. We'll see what GM ends up doing... But thanks for bringing that link over!

Yeah. I have no idea. the 08, and 09 SS/TC's are identical engine and tranny wise. They are also rated the same IF there are any differences it would be in the tuning which if for whatever reason could put out more HP in an 09 vs an 08.

So, I've had about a week to stew over this....and I have decided this. All modding on the SS/SC is now on hiatus. Money is going to be saved up and I am going to purchase a 2010 SS/TC in Summit White if the rumors of 290hp/310tq are true. I'll have a few grand saved up, some parts to sell (others will be carried over to the SS/TC), and a trade in with equity. If the rumors are not true I will have some money to dump into the SS/SC, if I don't get a SS/TC anyways.

you guys dont think the ss/tc do well as a fwd car? look at the nurb time. there is plenty of awd car that stays being.

and for 40 k you can have a "really" better car than a damn cobalt.
