so it would be more bulk, and slower, but a plusher interior.... FTL
if you're interested in that car, why not just step up to a car the same weight as yours but with another 100hp ~ your profile says you drive an '08 2.2L, so correct me if I'm wrong.
the current top dog cruze right now is a turbo'd 140bhp car

wow, the cruze is truly a joke in stock form. I bet the rods are not even forged and the head is formed out of glass, but an upgraded turbo, a tune, and who knows could wake it up a little, but nothing close to extraordinary.

the car is being touted as "all that" because of an interior that is being hearlded by the crtics as being leap years better than the Cobalt;
Those critics don't give a rip about an enthusiast car;
they complain about things like a notchy shifter, or feeling too many road imperfections, or a vehicle noise harshness ~ all the parts I like, and I think create personality in a car.
... truthfully I don't care for the Cruze's interior, it impressed on me as another "me too" interior like every other import currently being produced, and seemed too crowded (I saw one at the "new car show" a day after buying my Cobalt this past February).
just saying.

where I'm comming from is that I already have that much hp;
so it would be more bulk, and slower, but a plusher interior.... FTL

Vince from Trifecta posted in another thread that the 1.4l Turbo in the Cruze. has a cast iron block, forged rods, Ecm controlled thermostat and a air to air intercooler. He is expecting to make around 180HP with a tune on it.not bad considering the price of the Cruze. I'm thinking with a turbo swap it could even see around 260HP. Not bad when you consider the size of the engine.

I was watching a Cruze review video on YouTube and I must say, outside the non sport of it, I liked it a lot. It got me thinking, if an SS does come out, I will probably get one. I don't imagine me having a car payment after 2013-2014, so if the world doesn't end at 2012 then I will definately get one.

I want to like the Cruze, but the me-too exterior, the 4-door only option, and the poor engine choices are all deal-killers for me. The LUJ is an okay engine, as someone mentioned, forged rods and all that, but it's going to require a little bit of money to make some respectable power.
First, the Cruze is ~400 lbs heavier than the cobalt. The LUJ, stock, STILL makes 7HP and lbs ft less than the L61. Despite what I have seen in some places, I'm still more inclined to believe that the LUJ is NOT a GM Family II Ecotec like the LSJ and LNF, but is an Opel/Daewoo Family 0 or Family 1 Ecotec, it seems to have much more in common with the 1.8 in the base model Cruze and the 1.6L E-TEC II in the Aveo/G3.
So lets do a comparison here... Cobalt Base Model Coupe with the 2.2L LAP engine, 15,710 MSRP; Cruze 1LT with the 1.4L Turbo LUJ engine, 18,175... almost 2500 dollars more for a me-too compact sedan with 12 HP and 2 Lbs Ft less. Then you'll have to spend another 300-400 on a tune to get the thing up to a more respectable level, and even then it will barely make much more than the LE5 until you start replacing mechanical parts.
IMHO, the LUJ would be fine to stick in an Aveo to make that line a bit peppier, but give this market segment back the 2Liter+ Family II blocks we love.

Dart_SI, hey, the G5's interior was a downgrade from my I30, but was much better than the '90 Cavalier I had. If we compare the Cobalt and G5 to previous GMs like the Cavaliers, its like a BMW vs a Yugo. In my mind, the G5/Cobalt actually have a decent interior, simple and plasticky, but decent.

Its not even on the radar as a new car choice, it doesnt drive the correct set of wheels, fwd never again is my moto for new car buying. Its too bad the Camaro is so ugly and heavy, or it would have made my list of potentials. So far the bmw 135i is the only new car that has really caught my attention, otherwise new cars are too damn heavy. The other option on the table is to find a nice e30 bmw from down south and frame off restore it, then ls2/t56 swap it and daily drive that. Correctly done it will be just as reliable as buying a brand new car.
Also the "ecotec" in the cruze is not a real ecotec, its a cast iron deawoo engine that will likely tick like a clock for the 40k miles that it lasts.

The Ecotecs, plural, in the new Cruze are Ecotecs, just not the big Opel/Saab/GMUSA Family II blocks we've been blessed with in the states so far. The 1.8L is a GM-Opel Powertrain Family 1 engine, part of the series known as DCVCP Ecotecs. The 1.8 is only in the base model Cruze, all other trims get the LUJ, the 1.4L turbo, which is an Opel Family 0 engine. Ecotec actually refers to all Opel Family II engines, Family 1 engines, and most of the Family 0 engines with the exception of the Daewoo D-TEC and E-TEC/E-TEC II engines, and it also refers to what we know, the newest SAAB/GM Family II engines like the L61, LE5, LSJ, and LNF. The Family 1 and Family 0 engines just can't stand up the the Family II engines, they're TOO tiny and have about the same fuel consumption, once they're bogged down with all the federal emissions equipment. Further, I've always doubted the reliability of the Family 0 and Family 1 engines, just due to the horrible reliability of the E-TEC series that is based upon them. Granted, I'm sure they are built a bit better than the Daewoo sourced units, I still don't trust them. The biggest problems with these tiny engines is that, for being so little and having a lack of power, they still just don't have the greatest fuel efficiency.

I drove the 1.4t and it's not bad, I liked it, it handled way better than my old '06 LT 2.2 balt did, and it felt faster too, not slow at all considering the tiny motor it pulled pretty good from still, but that motor would've been more at home in the aveo, the outside of car looked good but it needs rims, lol, and I liked the interior too pretty fancy ****, and it has something the SS/tc should've came with a freaking storage compartment between the seats, told my wife if we get rid of the minivan we should get one of them

I think I'll just come out and say it, screw the Cruze, I'm not waiting for the SS, I'll take the new Regal GS instead for a compact. I'm going to look at an 07 CTS-V tomorrow though, so that will be my new sport toy; if I like it, that is, It's red though... I kinda wanted black or white. Still gotta get around to doing something with the old beater Nissan Hardbody too. I was thinking about a KA24DET or SR20DET swap.
