Auto Cobalt converted to 5 spd...the computer..
Auto Cobalt converted to 5 spd...the computer..
Does anyone know if the computer for a car running 5 spd is the same as the computer running automatic minus the auto programming?
I am seriously looking into my friends lsj tranny he has for sale and wanted to knwo if I could swap the pcm with a 5 spd 2005 2.2 cobalt and still have a working car.
thanks.

it's going to be a lot more complicated then just swapping the transmission.......Other things to think about, pedals, shift linkage, mater cylinder, shifter assembly, probably different transmission mounts.
Well to answer your question... If you can get GM Tech2, you can flash and change the RPO codes to the manual settings.
That being said... it is cheaper to trade in your car for a manual.... You are talking a MASSIVE amount of work and a MASSIVE amount of money.

The reason I ask this is because I have access to a rolled 5 spd '05 cobalt.
I want to take the PCM out. Most of you know it's held in with 2 pieces of plastic and has two main harness' running into it.
I would ASSUME that both the 5 spd harness and auto would be the same except for the extra wires for the auto tranny. I have checked the wiring diagram and from the looks of it the wires are the same on both control modules.
Therefore one would think that the PCM can be popped out and another of the same year can be put in it's place.
Does anyone else think this is possible.
I'm not asking about linkage and pedals and shifter .. I don't care about that stuff, I've got access to all of it.
I only care about the PCM in this case.

I dont think you can replace the PCM.... the problem is that the computers in the car are linked by VIN number. If you remove the PCM, and replace, it is going to be rejected and the car probably will not function at all.
Dont quote me on all of this, as I am by no means an expert.
I do know that when reflashing the 2.2 computers (as i did, look in my signature for the thread) one of the options you set along the way is auto or manual. If you can find a way to do that reflash, you would be able to adjust your current computer.

well, you "can" use the PCM...it will be programmed by vin...however all you would really need to do is a VTM learn so the security systems recognized the key
This topic has been covered to great length in the past.
You can not swap ECM's (not PCM's) on the Cobalt without a VIN reflash.
The cost to convert transmission types on these cars far exceeds the cost of simply trading your current car for the kind you want. There is no practical point to it.
