Cooling tank project

well im gonna try my had at a homemade cooling tank. I just bought a Cobra coolant resevior. What im going to do is cut 2 more holesinto the tank. i will run a copper tube and coil it up inside the tank. Ill then connect the copper tube to a C02 bottle and use the C02 to super cool the water.

Anyone got an ideas or suggestions in general?

If you run water youll freeze it, hell coolent mixed properly will still freeze if the CO2 goes through in its liquid state. Not to mention the pressures you'd be looking at either, just seems like a bad idea. I know guys have been running dry ice in cool cans for years, might try that first.

im not going to run water, i dont see a problem with pressure, the C02 and Water will be in two entirely different setups. Neither will actually contact eachother. If the water freezes i dont think that will be that big of a deal mainly because theres going to be a constant flow of hot water coming in which should melt it within seconds. I honestly think this could work, the hard part will be tunning the system so it doesnt push too much C02 or too little C02.

To keep liquid C02 from going into the system i was thinking on using a paintball expansion chamber.

Ill try and help you if I can here. first where are you mounting the bottle?

i was gonna mount it on the passenger side strut tower. THe bottle i got is from a cobra so it looks like it will fit perfectly. I was thinking if you have ever seen a heatsink used on a CPU that is water cooled, it is pretty much a big copper block with a passage way through it for water to travel. I think the copper block idea would be good because it could obsorb the cool C02 and allow for a better cooling effect. Kinda like making it do the opposite it would normally do.

ok so is this going to be something you just get out and do right before a run or run it off a switch and solenoid? Im thinking you wont need an expansion chamber 1.) because they are expensive and 2.) because you can achieve the same effect with some air line

yeah this would be something to do before a run or something. Not like a nitrous kit, but in the staging lanes and while racing, run the bottle open and keep the water cold.

ever thought about just mounting the bottle in the cabin? easy access and gives the C02 plenty of room to expand

you mean the C02 bottle? yeah sorry must be miss understanding you. The coolant tank bottle will be in the engine bay, the C02 bottle will prolly be in the car. Ill just run a line with a quick connect to the bottle. That way i can remove it and install it easily for track days. Im not sure what to use to open the C02 flow though, i would ideally like some kind of electronic powered selinoid that i can flick a switch a few times, kinda like a nitrous purge

ahhh yah sorry, I was talking about the CO2. You def will not need an expansion chamber then. I would just use an off valve on the tank, it will take just as long to hit a switch as it does that. You can also use an inline flow control valve to tweak the amount of CO2 going into the cooling box. If you wanted to also you could always have the dump-off of CO2 routed to the heat exchanger, I dont think the effect would be very great but you have to dump it somewhere so might as well.
