Curiosity kills
Hey guys so I have a 07 Cobalt as SC that's almost gutted in my garage and was thinking of turning it into kind of a sleeper I would like to get as close to 1000hp as possible and wandering what I'd need to do to make that possible
You won't get 1000hp out of it. You may get 800hp for a very short time, and the trans and good axels along with the built engine and big turbo will cost you a lot of money. Unless it's already got a tube chassis and setup for a V8 and rwd. Sorry
ill disagree on that. 1000 hp isnt that ridiculous, however its not a car you take to the grocery store. maintenance is also the key, and engine disassembly and component inspection will be regular maintenance.
to get the engine hold up at that sort of power is going to be a girdled/sleeved block, 2.0l crank, Carrillo rods, je pistons. likely also want to have the block machined for larger h11 head studs and main studs. a ported head will be a must, with larger valves, 94lb springs, solid lash adjusters, and a set of the gm race cams. also gonna want the hardened oil pump gears, billet timing chain guides and a mechanical chain tensioner so you can sit on the 2 step without killing the front of the engine. gonna need a huge turbo for this, enough fuel pump to feed it, likely 2 sets of 2250cc injectors. pick whatever stand alone ecu you like.
drivetrain is the next thing. no gm manual is gonna take the abuse. your best bet is a 4t65e hd thats been prepped for this abuse. axles will need to be custom made as nothing off the shelf exists for the 4t65e swap, or for the sort of power levels we are discussing.
id suggest having a look at the gm sport compact build book, pretty much all your questions can be answered in there. the info is a little dated, the books were put out around 2005, and the last revision was around 2007-2008. as some techniques have changed and so has parts availability the info here is still relevent.
