can it be done?

i've been thinking about painting my interior again. i did the dash pieces and door panels a few weeks ago but lately i've been looking at painting the center console black to match, at least the top half which i've circled and i was wondering if can those even be taken out? i hate the gray and i'm hoping to eliminate as much as possible so any input will be awesome, thanks guys!

Hmm...That's odd...

My Cobalt is an LS and has the grey interior but the top of my dash and the center console is all black.

It's a coupe though...

peice of cake to take it off. just pull up behind the ebrake, that peice will come off, then once that's off you can pull off the part around the shifter.

thats weird because i test drove an LS coupe that had the all grey interior. i swear every 'balt i looked at that day had the grey and the all manual crap. no biggie though, at least i can paint it! this should make for an interesting weekend project. also, on my way home earlier i thought about painting the two plastic pieces on my steering wheel. i know those probably come off but are they just held in by clips? i figured i'd ask before i went out and tore anything apart. thanks for all the replys guys

the pieces have been painted and so far are looking great. i'm going to let them dry overnight and stick them back in the car sometime after work tomorrow.

Well when I called the dealer I was TOLD I was getting an LT, which come with power. But after practically sealing the deal over the phone and driving 52 miles to get it I didn't have much of a choice but to get it. It was my Moms fault though because she wouldn't go see it before making a decision to buy it. They did only want the MSRP for it, unlike my local dealer which will rip you a new one. So I would rather have a LS paid for in full than a SS/SC financed.

Anyway, someone else on here was wondering about those steering wheel pieces as well. Not sure as to who it was, but it'd look hella nice if you could get those off and painted to match the other trim.

Good luck, can't wait to see pics!

when i went shopping for my car all they would show me were the LS' due to price range. i'm lucky i got what i got so i'm not gonna complain though power windows/locks would be nice to have

i would love to get those pieces painted but i read in another thread that the whole wheel needs to be taken apart to get those pieces off. i don't have the know-how to do something like that so i'm probably not gonna bother. anyway, i just put down a layer of clearcoat on those console pieces so hopefully in about an hour or so i can put up a few pics.

edit: took a little longer to dry than i thought but here's some pics...

i probably shouldn't have done the e-brake handle. i had to pull it up to put the center panel in place and it's already starting to chip. it's nothing too visible but i'm gonna look into getting a new one, possibly black if i can find one but other than that i like it

here's a few pix of my last cobalt. this is the "fixed" part, the first blue was way too bright. i color matched it to the exterior which was blue granite metalic.

HERE is the lighter blue that i didn't like.

Best of luck with your project! Write a howto -- I might look into doing this eventually. What kind of paint did you use? I'm going to be going from black to red if I do it, so I'm guessing that I'm going to need a white or grey primer coat before paint.

roko- that is a sweet car! not sure if i like the climate control being where the cupholders would be though but still, nice work.

raven- i used the krylon fusion satin black so no prep necessary. i did however put a coat of primer on the e-brake handle because i wasn't sure how well the paint would stick to it. it did scratch a bit when i put everything back in though. no biggie, the marks are barely visible.
