Carbon Fiber?

Hello gang,

Does carbon fiber really help save that much weight? What have you noticed in acceleration? What are the benefits? I looked around and notice some have hood pins and some dont. Are hood pins necessary? Or is it a race look? Thanks for any help. I also used search and couldnt find anything that askes these questions. Oh and another thing lightweight rims. Do they really help.? I have been looking at the OZ ultraleggera black finish rims they are 18.8lbs for $300.00 each.

-Thanks-

recomend hood pins because you never know, and there bad ass lookin but not too much weight savings with just 1 piece, if you get doors, hood, trunk, fenders you might see a siginifint difference but not with just a hood. more for the looks is what i want it for i guess. sorry for the spelling mistakes and not helping to much

the carbon fibre pieces do help save weight not gonna be extremely noticeable with just a few things tho. a lightweight wheel will as well, there is less rotating mass therefore quicker acceleration.
hope that helps!

Doesn't carbon fiber also help the engine breathe better? That's what I heard, but please correct me if i'm wrong.

^^ Yes, the engine definitely runs cooler. I've noticed since I had my hood put on that it's running better as well. And you actually hear your engine more since you don't have that stupid liner under the hood.

doesnt your hood have a scoop?? that would be why its running cooler. CF really isnt worth the money. a nice aluminum hood would do you just as well, be a lot cheaper. the wheels will def help, but you pay big $$$ for lightweight rims. im looking for 17X9 or 17X10's that are under 20lbs in a 5x4.5 pattern that arent too expensive. no chrome bs just nice looking wheels that also look good on a 65.

True, it does have a scoop, which helps dramatically. Regular CF hood without a scoop, I doubt you'll get any better cooling.

Lightweight wheels will improve the car much more than removing weight elsewhere. Lighter wheels/tires improve acceleration, braking and handling. Usually people feel a noticable improvement when changing to a lighter wheel/tire combo. Depends on how much weight you take off.

A CF hood saves what, maybe 30-40 lbs? I don't know for sure. Everyone knows that stripping weight improves HP/weight ratio, but that's probably not enough weight loss for much of a difference in performance.
Super-lightweight racing hoods need hood pins, but a well designed, quality hood shouldn't need them.

just my 2 cents, your reality may differ

weight does make a difference, this might sound crazy but i swear i could tell a difference in performance when i have my subs in my car compared to when i dont. I drove it when i was switching from the 15" to the 2 12"s and my car felt quicker. IDK maybe its just me.

No wing = less drag

Trap higher in 1/4mile without a wing

Does anyone know the weight savings with just a carbon fiber trunk lid? Especially from a 2.4 winged lid?

stock hood is around 45-47lbs
CF hood? 16-18lbs

is that enough to feel a difference? no
but weight reduction is a cumulative effect.

The really stupid thing to me is that the the stock high "wing" is not even a wing!! A true wing has a smoothly curved bottom with a fairly flat top, to create downforce. When you run your hand under the GM high wing you can feel a groove there, probably ruining its' effectiveness. And with the big mount I bet the whole thing does nothing but add drag and weight.

I was going to take mine off, then compare my gas mileage on a long strip of flat highway to see how much it changed. But I sold the car before I got the chance.
