Smile Carbon Fiber sunroof weight loss plan -- for less than $350

Just found this how-to

It was done to a BMW M3 but pretty much should work out just the same!

Who's going to be the first one to do it and make a Cobalt how-to?

Click here for sample how-to \/

if he removed the sunroof assy. i wonder if it reduces the structural integrity of the roof. Before attempting, id would personally look at what a non sunroof roof assy. looks like. I know on Chrysler products, the sunroof assy. crossrails replace the stock ones.

what if you kept all the sunroof stuff and the cf just replaces the glass...that way you can still open it.

id be pointless, the glass only weighs 10 lbs at the most. its the guts that weigh alot.

you would be better off just having the glass super tinted.

you could put the same seal that goes on the glass on the CF one.

you do realize that water does make it past that seal. Thats why you have drip trays and drain tubes in the sunroof assy. Watch the sunroof next time it rains harder than a drizzle, water comes in.

I know that their are drip rails. Thats why if you just replaced the glass with CF, it should work just fine.

it would never stay on, if even alittle air got under it, it would fly away. Its a good idea, but not worth the time/money.

my advice. don't do it.

weight saved vs time/money/effort spent. is not worth it. the real way to do it would be to get Crawford Composites 100% cf roof. or swap roofs with a non sunroof car.

i don't see a problem in doing what this guy did. however once you get to installation and making sure everything is sealed and fitting right. you are going to get stressed, frustrated...and give up. except instead of just being able to give up you'll have to reinstall everything, hopefully you don't break anything in the uninstallation process

The problem is you want to maintain the structural integrity of the roof. the only way to do that is to weld in cross supports where the rails for the sunroof were, that hole will flex crazy without any kind of support, that BMW in the picture would need an " x " welded on otherwise during a crash, the roof may just come straight down or during a roll over. Yes, im just a lowly auto tech who installs accessories, but I wouldnt **** you guys. If you guys dont want to take my advice, thats fine. The best thing you can do is just weld it up and hope for the best if you want to save some weight. The heaviest sunroof i have ever put in was in a Durango and the entire assembly including glass didnt weigh more than 35 - 45 lbs.

because the Carbon Fiber, while strong, is thin and would be prone to tearing, you would have to graft the metal frame of the glass for it to stay on. Its the same reason you are suppose to use hood pins when you install a Carbon Fiber hood, the bolt holes for the latch will just rip.
