Clean Engine

The person I bought my car from lived close to the beach.
So the engine is covered in this white crap.
Idk what its called.

What can I use to clean this off with?

I tryed just plain water and a rag, it stays clean for about 5 minutes, then it drys, and its right back.

Nah it isnt sand, I took it to my friends dads dealership.

He said its from being along the coast.

I havent tryed. Might sound stupid, but im very protective of the car.
I like to wash it by hand. Not use some huge sprayer type thing.

Yeah, that's why I never did it myself.

But ive seen many people do it personally. SO it must be safe?

dont be scared. i clean my engine bay whenever i wash my car. i open the hood and spray the bay with the water hose, avoiding the fuse box and alternator, and etc. it wont hurt if you get a little bit of water on those things but just try to avoid it if you can. then i take the car wash sponge and scrub the engine block, the valve cover, all the rubber hoses, etc. after that i just spray it again to wash the soap off. think about it. guys with ram-air and cowl induction hoods get tons of water in their engine bays every time it rains and their cars run fine.

It's probably salt, gonna have to scrub it off if you don't want to hit it with a pressure cleaner. Use some discretion and it will clean right up with no damage to anything.
