I do understand what hes saying tho im not completely shutting the idea out.

my friend did it on his extreme colorado. i guess the lowering kits from the factorys for whatever reason lower the passenger side not as much as the drivers side or vise versa i forget, and you have to take a half coil or something off of the opposing side spring. he did it and it rode fine and lasted for the two years he had the truck

Why cant all the arguments on here be like this conversation?
we said our points accepted eachothers points and came to a compromise. i dont think it was that hard of a concept.....

my person opinion on lowering a car is get coils. u buy the springs and after a while your struts are going to blow out, if your on the stock ones...... and u are gonna end up spending around the same price as coils to begin with

i wouldn't do it but how many times have you watched Overhaulin and Chip Foose cut springs to get the right height. I was shocked each time he has done it but he has over a dozen times. Done by the right person there is nothing wrong with it....make sure you got that thought THE RIGHT PERSON not a kid with a dremel or hack saw.

Not that it matters much really but here are a few posts about the same thing. I google Chip Foose cut springs and got pages of people saying the same thing. A car guy like him pulling this crap.

S-10's and Colorados are like this because the Gas tank is on the driver side,so driver side sat about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch lower depending on how much gas, which is why I cut my s-10 springs,so while I had it apart, just like the balt, figured why not make it sit how I want since I HAVE to cut them anyway. It is what it is. I like how it rides and handles and it's been extremely dependable and have never had any spring problems with any 3 of my Vehicles in the many many years I have owned them but hey,to each there own. It's not for everybody.Happy modding!!!!

How many of y'all have actually gone and cut coils properly, or installed coil clamps and personally seen them fail catastrophically? Honestly it seems like a lot of people jumping on the bandwagon of saying its stupid because it's cheap. There have been a lot of people to cut coils or clamp coils together with no ill effects. Hell one has chimed in on this thread. Yet everyone still bashes the notion. Honestly, it's pretty pathetic at this point.

Exactly. You've done it with no ill effects and have been running that way for years and yet no one seems to care. Or they just ignore you and dismiss it as nonsense.

Yeah well my$5 is in there,so if no one is gonna use my advice,I'll take my money back lmao.but yeah No issues ever.On the Balt I cut 3 coils off and those are on KYB GR-2 struts so the ride and handeling is really good in my own opinion. Then my mom will go for a ride and say it's too loud,it rides like a tank and you just got your ass kicked by a Civic. Is that how I raised you boi!!Smash that Honda!

Haha. Taking moms for a ride in modified cars is always fun!

I just think its sh*t though when everyone is automatically like "drop a grand on coilovers or you're a ricer". It retarded.

the main reason i tell people not to do it is because i'm figuring they have no experience doing it or hardly no mechanical background to do it the right way. i know i wouldn't feel comfortable cutting the springs on my own car and not everyone has done it like 1Low. it can be done, and can be done right, but i would guess it fails more times than it actually works out right like in 1Low's case...

Possibly. For failure,I'm gonna put that on user/installer error. They either heated them up to drop them(thus changing the sprig rate drastically)Cut them with a cut off wheel but did not take breaks and got them too hot(spring rate again) or used a grinder wheel as a cutoff wheel and they got super hot.Like I said,it's not for everybody, but I like to think I know what I am doing and trust my mechanical abilities. Before the balt,I had 3 trucks, all excessively lowered and at shows,if someone was lower than you,we were in the garage that day cutting **** up to get ours lower(no bags at time)The only springs of mine I didn't cut were on my S-10 Blazer 2 door. That's just what I do though.I make **** stupid low without air or dumping over $2000 in just suspension parts, unless I do air ride but that's a different story. If anyone has questions, feel free to pm me and I will be happy to answer.

exactly man, that's why when i see these kinds of threads i tell people to talk to you haha. i mean i do just about all the work on my car, i did all the work on my s10 when i had it, ive helped my best friend build who knows how many VW Rabbit's, there's just some things i don't feel comfortable doing myself. cutting springs would be one of them and tearing a motor apart would be another one (eh plus wiring too ) i'd love to go lower on the cobalt but i'm not gonna cut the eibach's i have on it now and if it's my DD i'm not gonna waste the money on coils either. who knows maybe i'll just order me a new set of sportlines or h&r's to go a little lower but then again i'd need shocks and struts at some point then too, 1 thing always leads to another

to be honest LS ...this is way safer than cutting or heating them up...i dont see an issue with ot ...or how it could go wrong ...ur not messing with the integrity of the spring at all...just compressing a coil...seems legit.

the thing with compressing a coil is that it takes away the ability of the spring to absorb a bump so all you're doing is making the spring rate really high, think about it.

yes and it's kind of hard to place them up there.I tried when I 1st got my car and could't get them to fit up there without hitting the strut tower or the frame(unibody) of the car.SO that's when I bought springs and did a chop job on em
