Debadging--- WARNING

well... i managed to f up my trunk while debadging my chevy logo.

the story:
started everything just fine.... blowdryer, credit card, and a lot of patience. the 3m tape was sloooowly coming off and the badge was peeling off nicely. i got a bit hasty and had a meeting in 15 minutes, so i started working the badge a little harder. i noticed that the blowdryer made the tape warm enough so that i could "twist" the badge back an forth.

i got a bit more impatient (trying to make my meeting) and managed to twist the badge off. in my efforts, i was focussed on one side of the badge, and let the other corner scrape back and forth along my beatiful silver paint.

needless to say, i have a small area of my trunk that is now without paint (by small, i mean a couple milimeters).... im a stickler about my car. i tried using cleaner wax and clay, then cleaner wax, then gloss wax. i still have a "chunk" of paint missing and some surface scratches around the area.

now i need to buy some touch up paint from the dealer.

so.... a 'heads up' to anyone removing their badge. dont be a ******* like me and be verrrrrry careful. it sounds easy enough, but in reality, its easy to mess up

Sorry to hear that... live and learn, huh? Post some pics, I'd like to see the kind of damage it could cause (not trying to be a jerk, just curious).

yea i had the mistake of letting my ex-gf (not my ex at the time) help debadge the rear. she took out 2 huge chips of paint. i was like wtf. luckily car was going into the body shop to get front bumper repaired anyways, and the owner was a family friend so he filled the chips in for free.

ill take a pic tomorrow. i did this yesterday.

the debadged trunk look really sleek. i love it. just this minor 'dark silver' spot on the silver that makes me cringe. i think the surface scratches can be credited to my girl trying to take off some of the glue around the scratch with her fingernails.

i already have a ding in my hood (occured after 500miles) from a rock or something. ??? needs some touch up paint. im getting a carbon fiber hood within the next month anyways tho, so i let that one slide.

Now that I've debadged my rear I'm thinking about getting my trunklock shaved since it's kind of an eyesore. I'm sure a shop would fix those paintchips for you if you got yours shaved and painted... Since it's right in the same area and they'd be filling/priming/painting anyways.

The easiest way still is using dental floss to slice the tape then rolling the tape off with your thumb, then cleaning the residue with a mild solvent. Or an eraser wheel on a drill.

I have little fine scratches on my trunk now. The chevy badge came off by just prying with fingers and NO glue left over, it was clean. The problem was the dealer logo. It was peeled off and glue was left on. I used glue gone and it took forever. I think the scrubing to get it off is what caused the fine scratches.

Any easy way to fix this. I waxed my car after but it didn't help fully. Should I apply MORE wax in the problem area next time?

Don't ever use paper rags or towels to rub paint anything. Not that you did, just FYI. Just use a fine polishing compound and rub out the scratches. Then wax over that.

i guess im not alone. i thought i was the only one that did this.

although i got some scratching, the side of the emblem i took my time on turned out ok. the side that i rushed on ended up bad.

i used some detailing clay (you can pick it up at Napa) and instant car detailer for lubricant. it filled in some of the scratches and lessened the minor ones in the clear coat. then i finished everything up with a coat of cleaner wax and another coat of gloss wax.

.... going to take a picture now

edit: sorry, no picture at the moment.... my camera is being finicky

At least your car is silver and not a dark color.
