fixing headlight lenses..

My headlights had been peeling for months. Decided topaint my lights housing. I painted them and now the lens got some scratches. I need help gettingg them looking new. My brother says I should buy a can of clear and wetsand them then spray the clear coat on them. Is that my best option? How do anyone here fix scratches and get them looking Clear again?

I bought badly peeling gen 1's and all I did wet sand each entire light with soapy water and 1500-2000gritt till the peeling was gone, then I to0k some Mquires scratch-X put it on a rotary buffer and went to town. Worked great, they look like new
