G5 GT rear bumper on SS coupe...
I was simply saying that I seriously doubt fiberglassing them back in to a new bumper when he just took the Cobalt bumper off would make any sense. Not sure if you were just joking around or not.
forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't the 2005 Pontiac Pursuit (coup & sedan), and Cobalt sedan have the same rear end?
I am pretty sure that the early Cobalt sedans had the Pursuit/G5 tail lights & bumper cover - but I didn't really pay much attention to the bumper covers between the two;
This one I am probably mistaken on, but I also thought '05 base model Cobalts used the same rear as the Cobalt-sedan & Pursuit...
I do seem to recall that the easiest way to distingish '05 model year Cobalt SS's from the rest was the tail lights - then the SS tail lights seemed to get carried over to the rest of the Cobalt line a year or two later...
Although I'm pretty sure, I'm not 100%, and maybe this was a Canadian difference?
(since the Pursuit was Canada only, then when the model was expanded to being available state-side, the name was changed to G5)

Coupes and sedans never had interchangeable parts. The lights and bumpers are different, and putting coupe parts on a sedan or vice versa would require a lot of body work. The Pontiac Pursuit is identical to a G5, it's the exact same car. It was just sold here in Canada before being released in the States, when it was fully renamed to Pontiac G5. Look around here in Canada and you can see some that are actually badged as a Pontiac G5 Pursuit. They used that as something of a transition period in 2006 and then in 2007 they completely dropped the Pursuit from the name. But never was the Cobalt coupe ever different between base models and SS based on tail lights.
Cobalt coupes always had the round tails, the Pursuit and G5 coupes had the tails that look similar to sedan tails, but will only fit on coupes. All sedans, Cobalt or Pontiac, use the same tails, which have a reverse light built in.
I much prefer the SC/TC rear lip to the one used on the 2.4s, combined with the front lip it completes the look that side skirts attempted (and failed) to produce on the 2.4. The rear lip makes a dual setup a bit more difficult to do, but not impossible...

In any case, I'm still interested in seeing the final result of what this swap entails, just to see how it looks in the end. If I were doing it I would color match the G5 tails with the body of the car and leave the red circles visible so it would be harder to tell that it's actually a G5 tail light.
