Getting fogs to turn on automatically?
Getting fogs to turn on automatically?
Is there any way to splice the wires for the fog lights onto the wires for the headlights so the fogs automatically turn on when the headlights do? Im the son of a plumber so me and electronics dont mix well, so finding out on my own isnt an option. Just wondering if an electronics buff could give me some help.
errr since ur not good with electronics ill try but it prob wont do any good.
a relay takes a signal and in turn switches a switch to let power to an accessory.
all u need to do is make a relay harness that when it gets the signal that ur DRLs or w/e u want is on that ur fogs will turn on.
this is the safe and proper way to do it. with a fuse inline after the relay.
its actually pretty simple if u kno wht ur doing

What you suggest would mean putting both on the same circuit, which would overload it. You need a remote switching unit. What that means is when power is on to the headlights, it sends a signal to an electronic switch which is connected in parallel to the fog light button on your dash. The unit would essentially do the same thing your finger does by pushing the button.
Well I would probably ask a friend to help.. but if it takes too much effort than its worth, I wouldnt do it. Its not that I mind pushing the button, I just figured if there was a semi-simple way to get the lights to turn on automatically, why not do it?
Because it's not 50 state legal. That's why fog lights are always goofy - some places you can't run fogs without your headlights on, other places you can't run fogs unless conditions permit, I don't know of anyplace that it's legal to drive with your fogs on when your high beams are on (which is why our cars shut them off when the highs are on).
If you think a button is bad, my mom's Sebring you have to have the headlight knob turned on on the steering column, then you have to grab the end of the knob and pull it out to enable the fogs to come on.

so feasibly if i can find that circuit i can either cut it and run it to my fogs instead but what i dont know is if that wire is run in series and all my friggin lights will go off but if its run to the e brake it cant be in series it has to be separate wires
so im guess all i need to do is find my multi-meter and what ever light has no power with the e-brake engaged is the DRL's and the circuit should open with the e-brake disengaged.
if it sounds like im rambeling its cus i am but someone tell me if that sounds about right.

Ford has it so, if you pull out on the switch, than the fogs are engaged until you push the switch back in. -- Depending on what setting the switch is on (auto, off, parking lights, headlights)....
thanks for the input.. Im probably gonna talk to my friend, he went to school for this kinda thing so Im sure he can help me out if I run into any issues.
Its like I said, I dont really mind pushing the button, its just if theres a way to do it automatically, why not do it?

i was wondering if its possible to just change out the button to one that stays locked on and locked off, if that makes sense. you know one of those buttons that makes a click when pushed haha

My dad's lexus has that.

The purpose of circuit protection (in this case a fuse) is to protect the wiring, not the actual thing (in this case the lights). So unless you plan on putting in higher gauge wiring throughout the car, no, you can not just put in a bigger fuse.

your wires will not burn and your fuse will not burn if you just splice them in...ive had mine this way for over a year
