Custom paint jobs IMO are a waste of money if you DD the car, its only gunna get F'ed up, be more of a hassle than an enjoyment, and makes the car MUCH harder to sell in the end, usually the more money you put into a car, the less you will get in return.
Id say stay with the black, drop the money into the motor or your pocket.

Congrats! I am actually in the process of getting mine done right now. It isn't about the turn around on your investment... it is about getting something that is truly unique and being happy with your car. I actually think a paint job adds to the potential resale of a car. After all one of the first things that people try to do when buying a used car is haggle the price down due to cosmetic damage... If you can keep the paint job in great shape (garage it, baby it, etc..) you stand to be ahead of the game overall...
Now as for the fade... I actually really like fades. They are one of the more striking paint jobs you can do. I do think that it will be more effective if you stick to the body lines of the car. Also, I tend to favor fades that don't contrast too much (maybe light blue to dk blue?) but that will be a personal preference. One other thing to consider would be to ghost-in an effect... it is expensive, but looks really, really great... You can also add a pearl to the paint to give it a chameleon-like effect....

ya i had other ideas like get a color thaqt changes from blue to black in different lights and make that my stripes and make the black my body color so in one light it all looks black and in another it has blue racing stripes.... but idk
And jon why lie? it is your DD
hahahaha, reminds me of my wifes dad who painted his 92 corrola for $500, he put a sticker on the paint and a couple of days later decided to take it off, well the sticker wasnt the only thing that came off, a chunk of paint came with it to.
