Headlights Stripped With Bleach:

Has anyone stripped the inside of their headlights with bleach before painting?

Anyone have pictures? I tried searching, No dice.

? when I painted my headlights I just scrubbed them down in rubbing alcohol, that stuff's fantastic at de-greasing, would bleach not be crazy overkill? and leave a residue?

No sir. People use it on all kinds of plastic dipped in chrome.

Youtube it.

It leaves the plastic with NO paint on it, and nice and smooth ready for priming and paint.

Just did this last night, I bought two containers of outdoor strength bleach and poured them in a plastic hefty tub. Then you just throw the shrouds in and let them sit for a couple hours and presto you have plastic. Just make sure you don't let any metal screws or anything go in otherwise they will corrode very quickly and it won't look like the bleach is doing anything at first, you have to give it a good hour before you notice much of anything.

it wont work. well it does but it doesnt. it works well on headlights because what kind of abuse does the inside of a headlight see? none at all. do that on chrome thats exposed to elements and its going to chip away and fail sooner or later. paint DOES NOT stick to chrome well. even with adhesion promotor.

anytime you can get down to a BARE plastic finish and paint it properly like a raw plastic bumper cover from a manufactuer its MUCH MUCH better.

i stripped my subaru headlights by using a light media and blasting it off. however this cant be done with certain manufactuers. reason being is some use heavy chrome dip thats extremely hard to blast off and eventually you will blast away or weaken the plastic. . however it worked well for me. then i prepped the plastic with 600 grit wet and a plastic cleaner paste and scuff pad to finish them off. guarentee if i left the lenses off it would take a very long time before you start seeing chips and stuff.

Well I did bleach all chrome to strip it. Takes a while to get it stripped. Shrouds were a matter of seconds.
