HIDs installed in Projectors (56k ease it in like a gentleman)

So I recently bought the black housing projectors off of ebay. Took about 3 weeks to get here... but they made it. I also bought an 8000K H1 HID kit on ebay (Pilot is the brand). I finally got everything in, so I went ahead and installed the HIDs in the projectors, and then put them in the car.

I can say this... wow. Seriously, the lighting is great. I can finally see the road at night. I put Silverstars in the high beams, and they look horrible compared to the HIDs. The 8000K is supposed to be a bluish-white, which the actual light (on the road and other objects) is that color. But the projectors look purple when you look at them (probably some refraction or whatever through the lenses.... I'm not a lighting expert, so I don't know). They look good though, and they perform even better.

Install wasn't too hard. Definitely required some modification to the projectors though. Nothing a little drilling couldn't fix. Aiming the projectors was easy. I don't know if people are dumb, or if my projectors were easier to work with, but I had no trouble aiming them.

I wired up the halos to the parking lights, so they are on whenever the side markers are on (no flashing with the DRL/turn signals). I left the LEDs unwired, cause I don't really care for them. I may hook them up to a switch eventually.

Here are some pics:

First installed (needed aimed):

After aimed (near perfect as you can see the crosses):

No glare from 25ft:

Down in the actual beam:

Like I said... they look great. Best $400+ spent on lighting ever.

you should post an after pic from the same spot that you did the before pic.

you can't really tell if theres no glare above the cutoff because the pic isn't any higher...

from what I can tell in the pic so far thats better than I expected HIDs to look in them...

I have HID's in my stock housing for almost a year now and no problems what so ever. These are the HALO HID's that I purchased from member Uneek... Awesome price!! I had a little situation with the ballasts sometimes working and he took care of it no problem and sent me out a brand new set in exchange for mine... The new ones were updated than the old style I had.. What is awesome is that they now come with a 9007 adapter plug to attach to your headlight plug. The style I had before i had to wire them myself and use electrical tape to hold it in. Now they are literally plug n' play

HID's run cooler than halogen bulbs.

So whats the modification needed to make the HID's "work" in the projectors.

The only before picture here is the first one showing the off-aim, which has an after pic (2nd pic) from basically the same view point. I show the glare cut-off in the 3rd pic vs 4th pic (out of cut-off and in the beam, respectively).

As RallyYellow stated, HIDs run cooler than halogen bulbs. So no, these will not melt anything.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your post, but my HIDs are NOT from Uneek. These are a different kit that I bought off of a vendor on eBay. These are by Pilot. Mine cost $188 shipped compared to $240 for Uneek's kit. This kit is an H1 bulb with wiring harness adapters for H1 plugs. So basically the setup runs like this... stock 9007 plug into projector headlight harness.... projector headlight harness (H1 plug for low beams) into HID harness (which is into the ballast)... ballast into HID H1 base bulb. The ballast has the built-in ignitor, so there is only one unit per bulb. The ballast is also in a metal box rather than some cheaper kits with plastic housing. Uneek and VisionBulbs both sell kits very similar to this... they just cost more.

It's a secret. Haha... j/k. The bulbs are slightly (and I mean ever so slightly) larger than normal H1 bulbs. So the hole in the base of the projector lamp had to be drilled maybe 1-2mm. There is also a return lead from the tip of the bulb to the base. This runs parallel to the length of the bulb. The return lead sticks out from the bulb a matter of a few mm too far to fit through the hole in the base of the projector lamp. So a slot to fit that had to be drilled as well. I can diagram this for you if you really need it. I don't really feel like taking the lights out to take actual pictures... but diagrams wouldn't be too hard to make.

You know, I thought of this after I went out tonight. I didn't have my camera. I'll try to get a pic tomorrow night (but only after the Steelers game). I don't know what halogen bulbs in the projectors looks like since I just put the HIDs in as soon as I got the projectors... but these are damn nice. I can see everything. Definitely worth it IMHO.

If anyone is interested, the HALO HID kit is currently on sale for $215 shipped. A couple of members have already installed an H1 kit into the projectors and I can honestly say it looked great.

I was speaking for myself.. These, meaning, mine. I guess i should have said my HID kit was from Uneek.. And the kit from Uneek is not cheaply made. Metal boxed ballasts with full plastic plate mounts, plug and play adapters to plug right into the headlight plug. I'm not knocking yours i'm sure they are great. they looked good but whats weird is my 8k kit doesn't look purple like yours. Mine shine bright white with a tint of blue when u look at them directly.. very weird.. could be the manufacture of the bulbs. I like the tint of purple

if you go to the link in Uneek's sig and check out the pics those pics are the old version, the new updated design is what I was explaining..

Ah ok, I gotcha. I wasn't saying that Uneek's kit is cheap. I was just saying that mine is basically the same type of kit. There are other kits out that are cheap. Mine has a metal ballast box and metal mounting bracket, just like Uneek's.

To be honest, I think the purple tint is from the projector lenses. My only other guess is that maybe they shipped the wrong bulbs.

Haven't had a chance to draw up a diagram yet, but I did take a picture of the road at night with the HIDs. It's very hard to tell how good the light output is, but I'll post it anyway. I should get one of the other local Cobalts with stock lighting to take a picture and compare with the same camera settings. That would probably be more helpful.

i'm sure there are kits out there for fogs but that would pretty much defeat the purpose of the fog lights.

Pretty much any HID conversion kit for H11 bulbs would work. You may have to modify the fog light to fit the bulb though (similar to what I had to do for the H1 bulbs in the projectors).

Thanks for the compliments. It was expensive... but I still think it was worth it. A proper HID setup isn't cheap if you want it done right.

I'll work on getting a simple diagram up for the setup.

They only way I would agree to put a plug in play kit in the car! Looks awesome. There are also a few tricks you could do to bring out the color in the cutout, but I would leave it as is since there was already a fitment issue with the bulbs!
