Late Model Auto Shifter Question..

Hey guys,

So ,as soon as the new Cobalts came out (with the auto shifters with the boots) I immediately liked the look. It replaced the cheesy chrome fitting thing, and made everything much more flush. If you're not sure what I mean, compare image one, to image two.

New:

Old:

Anyway, it obviously look better. NOW, today at work, I drove one where the bottom of the boot was slightly off the base, so I pulled it up to reveal several trim tabs. The bottom of the boot snaps into the base. It's also snapped into the shifter (or something), and I'm wondering how to get the top of the boot off without breaking anything..

So, I'm wondering about the actual boot removal, but also about the base in which it'd snap into. Can you simply replace the old base with the new one (with snaps for the boot), or is it actually part of the shifter assembly? I had to have my entire assembly replaced, but it was before this one came out. So I'm not sure.

I'm imagining these are pieces you can score at a junkyard really cheap.. Any help would be awesome.

Lastly, anyone know of any other GM knobs that work on our auto shifters? G6, Saab, CTS, etc..

So are you asking about converting one? I'm kinda confused about what you're asking?

lol

Yes. I'm asking how hard it would be to convert to the new "boot style" which is simply the boot and the base with the shift pattern on it. And also how to remove the boot from the shift knob.

I noticed after looking at my shifter, that you MAY not need to remove and replace the actual shift face, but the tiny trim ring only (that goes around the "shift line". If you look at it, you'd know what I meant.
