led tails.....complete or just inserts?

Ok, so some of you have seen the pics/vids of the led tails i designed......but i'm wondering that if they were to be released......would people rather have sets that just replace the stock tails, or just the boards that you can install yourself?

For those that dont know... To install the boards in the tails, you'de have to bake the tails at 210degrees for 10 minutes to soften the sealant around the lens, then remove the sealant with a small flathead screwdriver. Once that is done, you can install the board, glue it in place, then put the lens back on and seal it up with new sealant(RTV)...

there would be an obvious differance in price between just the boards, and ready to install tails...but i wanna find out how many people would actually be able to handle the job of installing the boards themselves and how many would want full tails...

in case you dont remember, or havnt seen the pics/vids yet.............

The new design is a little bit differant and uses wide angle led's instead of narrow angle led's...this creates a light thats easier on the eyes of the people behind you and also allows for the entire lens to be evenly lit, instead of having a bright spot in the middle.

lemme know what you guys would rather see.....full tails, or just boards...

could you give us dimensions on the board and how does it work with running lights vs brake lights?

if you look at the reflective surfaces of the inside of the tails, you'll see there's a distinct circle that the beveled reflectors end and the smooth side begins. The boards sit right there, right where the bevels end. which is a 4" circle.

The boards will have a standard 3157 type base on it so that it plugs right in. In the old design (pictured above), the inner 3 rings of led's formed the running lights, and the outer 3 rings formed the brake/turn signals. In the new design, the design that would be released, the inner 2 rings are the running lights, forming a smaller, but still easily noticeable running light. the outer 4 rings will be the brake light / turn signal. The old design as stated above uses 3mm narrow angle led's. These cause a small but very bright point of light. Basically if you're not directly behind them, they will not be very bright at all. The new design will be using 5mm wide angle led's. These are the same led's found in the third brake light insert. The use of 5mm wide angle led's allows for an even spread of light. The 5mm led will be clearly visible almost 180 degrees from the source(almost right beside it). The wide angle will also hit the reflective surfaces on the inside of the tails a lot more and thus actually create a brighter tail light glow than with the 3mm led's.

If you want more technical info than that, just let me know...for now i dont want to make people fall asleep reading my posts

Pricing wont be determined nor released until a general idea of how much interest there is in them. Lets just say that the price for full tails will be at least double the price of just the boards, and lead times would be longer as well since I personally would be assembling them.

well like i said, thats the original version...the newer version doesnt have as many led's, so they dont look as cluttered... to show you what i mean:

I'll make a couple more layouts and let yall decide which yall like best...

ok...some animated pics...to give you an idea what the tails would act like:

Version 1

Version 2

Version 3

The part that stays lit would be the running lights...the blinking part would be brake/turn signal

input on designs would be good...any ideas?

if it was cheap enough, i'd do the inserts, but it'd have to be half price or less!

i suppose now is as good a time as any to unvail the layout for the reverse light housings...making it a full led conversion...i'll also make a new thread for those...

i colored in the spots to show what they'de be. the outer red ring could be wired into the running lights, or the turn signals...your choice. see new thread for comparison pics of what my stuff is capable of, compared to a drop in 921 bulb from a competitor..... https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/appearance-48/led-reverse-lights-w-optional-running-light-turn-signal-73595/

I think using Version 2 for the outers (or a design more similar to the reverse light design) plus the reverse lights would look killer. You'd have basically what looks like red halos as your running lights on the back, then the middle on the outers would be the brake and the middle on the inners is the reverse.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I'd prefer a complete set, rather than just boards. While I'm sure I could be capable of installing the boards myself, it's just easier to remove the tails and install new ones instead of having to completely dismantle them.

I'd love this idea in this configuration:

However, I'd like to see how bright they are. I'm sure they'll look great behind some Niteshades!

What about throwing some amber LEDs in for the turns? I always like the idea of a full housing, but if there is a huge price difference, then I'm sure people wouldn't mind taking the time to pull apart their housings and installing the insert. I haven't been following this much, but what would the prices be both ways?

amber leds for the turn signals? the tails have a red lens...amber wouldnt show...

there would obviously be a signifigant differance in price between just the inserts and full replacements, seeing as how i'de have to buy new housings from GM.

No prices yet.
