Hey all. I've been fighting some HID issues. I previously had a pair of ballasts that were a gift that never gave me any issues (not sure of the brand.) As of last year I had purchased new headlights and purchased Xentex HIDs. They worked great, for a few weeks. Then randomly one headlight wouldn't fire, then would and visa versa. I've replaced the ballasts several times now to no avail. I've asked around and have been told Morimoto is the way to go, although others have wondered if my G5 is causing the issues by firing the lights as soon as I start the car and if I should install a time delay. Anyone have any suggestions as to the route I should go? Thanks!

 

Try switching bulbs/ballasts from side to side. Make sure the rubber insulators on the connectors are not in the way as well.

Just a few things I've tried/ran into when I had problems with HIDs. Xentec isn't the best brand either, but I would scrap the "time delay" thing.

 

Ok I will try to give that a shot soon. Hopefully something works because it is super frustrating.

 

Xantec kits are shitty as ****.

I went through two kits and another ballast in 3 months. Every ballast that died was from corrosion inside the ballast.

Buy a kit with metal cased ballasts (AC) and put some silicon around them.

Xantec is a waste of money and they will never acknowledge the warranty either.

 

I've used Xentec twice now and the first time never had any problems. This second kit is too new to tell.

My first question is did you use a relay harness? If not, that could very well be your problem. Also, did you pull the DRL fuse when you installed them?

 

We did use a relay harness but did not pull the fuse that I know of. Hmmm that may be worth a try

 

To my knowledge, not pulling the DRL fuse can cause them to start wearing much faster. You may have jacked a ballast, but depending on how long ago they were bought and who the seller was, most sellers I've dealt with are good about replacing parts that break. My first kit came with a bad ballast and after calling was replaced with a new one no questions asked.

 

problems with xentec hids? who would have thought.... seriosuly ditch those pos kits.... they suck. i had a couple kits and ditched them when ballasts kept dying and just went morimoto.

 

Yeah I've had it with them too. Ordering the morimoto's tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be the last time I have to mess with my HIDs for a few years lol

 

Some ricer had these on the car when I bough it. Complete crap lol Replaced the lights with stock lights with black housings. I don't understand the obsession with HIDs but to each their own.

 

i have hids in my retros and i still hate hids, just one more thing to fail... never cheap out :P

I have use them for years with no issue, but they don't give the proper wattage so bulbs will not give 100% output/color

You don't have to pull the DRL fuse cause the DRL are high beams and I'm assuming you're using single beam HID which would be the low beam... So they shouldn't turn on when you start the car... And I had the same problem. I use Xentec in my civic and my girlfriends accord, honestly never a problem and my grandma loved how bright they were guess what, I'm probably the only grandma with aftermarket hids...

But I used this brand with my cobalt.. Worked for a day or two then one headlight was out but bulb was fine and it literally would turn on whenever it wanted to... So I pulled them out after a week. Cheap enough to be considered "water under the bridge"

 

That's the most frustrating part I think. I know multiple people running Xentec lights with no issues. And then there's me and the G5 with an ever switching pididdle. Lol. Bought some Morimoto Elites today, praying for no more issues. The fiancé and I are getting tired of pulling the headlights off and the bumper off(running them in the fogs too off a switch and started acting up also.) We installed the ZZP stage 2 supercharger kit on the car this winter with no problems but can't figure out the HID issues lol. Go figure. All go and no lights!

 

Also, if I pull daytime running lights but start the car in the garage the car will still "sense" that it is dark and turn on the HID's. How do I prevent them from coming on when I start the car in the dark/at night? May be a dumb question but I honestly am at a loss. That's why we were thinking the time delay switch to keep them from starting until 10 secs after the car has? Maybe the pulse from starting the car was burning up the ballasts? Just don't want to ruin the Morimoto's.

To be a troll I'd say get a flashlight and use it on the sensor before you start the car but I really don't know.

I don't know why the Xentecs don't work with our cars but I guess its just something you gotta bite the bullet for and dish out a few more pennies for.

I was planning on doing my own retros too which will be an expensive project but will be getting the his from the retrofit source. Seems to be a good site for HIDs and related parts.

 

Turn your auto headlights off, when the pop on turn the headlight switch to off. There should be a prompt that the auto headlights are off. But now you have to physically turn the headlights on when it gets dark.
