Project: Polished Aluminum Wheels (completed-pics)

it all started like this:

^^ both driverside wheels looked like that. pretty serious curb rash.

once i got to work, they began to look more smooth, and the scratches came out fairly easily... but it was time consuming.

yesterday, i had the front wheel 90% done, but the back one remained unpolished

today:

*one with flash, one without.

I'm writing the how-to right now. once it gets approved, you will be able to find it in the how-to section.

plus, you could p.m. me with a pic of your damaged wheel for advice, or to ask if i think it is repairable.

so did you basically grind off the paint and then polish the aluminum?

yeah. i started with 60+80 grit for the scratches. then i used 180, 220, and 330 respectively to smooth them out. then i used Blue Magic liquid metal polish.

i curbed my rims up pretty bad around the lip, like where the rim overcomes the tire. It has metal flakes peeling off it but i was thinking it could be repairable. if i find a camera ill send u some pics cuz its just the polished lip part, about a quarter inch thick around 2 wheels

Oh ok. I am surprised you didn't go higher with the grit to 800, 1500, 2000+

Looks good. I;ve cut curb knicks on my car. No nearly as bad as you had, but the paint is peeling. I am considering getting my rims powder coated but thats a lot of $$ but I also like the look of the very shiny polished rims. Maybe a project for a weekend...should I have a free one anytime soon. lol.
