Get some automotive tape, a level, and then measure the location of an emblem on another Cobalt. Park your Cobalt on a level surface. Run/fix the tap across the trunk lid at the lowest point of the emblem's position and use the level to insure the tape is straight/level across. Then measure and mark the center of the tape on the trunk lid. Then using 2 strips of tape to mark the outer sides fix the tape to where the left and right side of the emblem will be -- use the level again to make sure they are straight up. Now you have the area the emblem goes marked out with the tape and can use the tape to help guide you.

that help?
