Radiator Grille Guard

Looking to get some opinions from fellow Cobalt owners. I'm the proud owner of a Rally Yellow Cobalt SS Supercharged. I'm thinking about getting the Radiator Grille Guard (Comes standard on Cobalt LT Sedan). It's $89.95 plus whatever my dealer would charge to put it on. The question I have for anybody reading this post is...

On a Rally Yellow Cobalt, how do you think this would look? Appealing? Ugly? Please give any opinion you have.

See the Radiator Grille Guard here:

Supercharger need?

I'm thinking it would effect the supercharger and the need to breathe? Stay cool? Looks better without.

Chrome on yellow, I don't think that would be to appealing. On black maybe, but not yellow. Plus I agree, it does look better without.

Grill's good

Uhh, putting a grill on the front of an SS wouldn't affect the supercharger, that's only affected by the air intake. The grill, at most, would slightly restrict the air flow to the radiator. Put it on and watch your coolant temp, if it runs too hot, take the grill back off.

If it comes stock on the Sedan then wouldn’t you think the engineers behind it took the precaution of enough air getting to the radiator, and made sure that it doesn’t restrict airflow. the slots look big enough i don’t think it would stop much air from getting in. the grill lines don’t look think or anything?

I'm not worried about airflow, and I think the the protection is important, and it looks pretty good.

I just got back from a long trip, I remembered about one part of the trip where I was on a lonely back road after a short rain shower and saw alot of frogs on the road. Well, looking at the radiator this morning, it looks like a frog massacre took place.

If seeing the insides of a frog makes you , don't click the thumbnail:

I got the grill from Mr. Grill on E-bay, I don't have to worry about frogs, but damage from stones I had. I fixed what i could before i installed the grill.

Has anyone put a mesh grill cover on? I bought a piece of mesh to do it, now I just need to trim it and put it on, I figured it would be less restrictive on airflow but would still protect it from stone damage...just wondering what other people thought. I can't believe they put the black plastic mesh on the back bumper but didn't put anything over the front opening!

I just ordered a grille for the 2006 SS non-S/C. It took a while to find a part number but it will be here on Thursday.

Where did you buy it from? Looks good. Can you get a close-up pic? What's it made of? Thanks!

I got it at Advance Auto Parts, cost $35. It involved cutting extra off the ends and bending the bottom up so it didn't hang down too low. It's just plain old metal. I fastened it on using black cable ties, there were 2 spots on the top to fasten it and 3 on the bottom. Really cheap, easy thing to do. If you want to go even cheaper, you can also go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get chicken wire and do essentially the same thing, but I thought this looked nicer.

I'll run outside now and get a closer pic of just the grill material....

EDIT: Here's the close-up

I don't see the pics. They are all gone via IE or something strange. I'm not concerned about cost at all. Just the protection AND looks. Thanks for the info though.

Thanks !! It was pretty easy to do, too; took a little time to cut the guard to fit. I had to cut it about 3 times, I wanted to make absolutely SURE that I didn't cut it too short so I just took a few inches at a time. As far as securing it, I used black 8" cable ties to hold it down since they hold incredibly well and there's virtually no chance of them coming undone unless the ties themselves are actually cut. The black blend in well with the car, and I cut the extra plastic off about 1/8" from the fastener so that it wasn't too close nor did they have "tails". The top two are invisible, I secured them above the opening - there are 2 little fastener places that you can thread the ties around (hard to explain and even harder to take a picture or else I would. And I don't know how noticable they are in the picture, but the bottom 3 ties are secured around those three plastic things in the small bottom slit on the bumper. They are visible from the outside, like I said you really can't notice them too much in the picture, or in person for that matter, you really have to know where they are and look for them. The last thing I had to do was bend the metal at the bottom up just a hair (maybe the bottom 1/4") because it stuck out below the bottom of the bumper, but that was easy becasue the mesh bends by hand. I wanted to leave it covering the bottom slit too just because I thought it looked good.

Nope, didn't even use a jack and jack stands but then again I'm a girl so I'm small enough to crawl under the front end of the car. You really don't have to do MUCH under it, just secure the top fasteners. If you don't think you can make it under the front (it was a TIGHT sqeeze for me), then use the lift (just driving it up on ramps would work, you don't need much room at all). To be most time efficient, measure and cut the mesh first. What I did was I held it up to the outside and eyeballed it once or twice then I actually lifted it up and held it behind the opening and figured out how much more needed to come off (you can do that part off the lift) and cut it to the final size. Once you get that all done, it shouldn't take you more than 10-15 minutes to do the rest of it...it's just a matter of deciding where you want to secure it and getting the cable ties on it, then bending that little bit that hangs down up. Overall with cutting and measuring and installing everything it took me just over 20 minutes to do the whole thing. It's a REALLY simple thing to do.

BTW, we don't have an "Advance Auto Parts" here in Nevada. Do any of you know who would be the same? PepBoys? Autozone? Checker? I can always just go to each of them and look. Nevermind. I went to PepBoys! They have tons! Not specific for the SS/SC, but I'm sure I can custom cut it.
