Removing Window Tint

Last night i got pulled over, and decided that rather continuing to pay $105 for every ticket, I'll just take it off and deal with it. I got the tint off, and am two hours into removing the adhesive with a razor blade. It's taking forever, and my window currently roll down because of all the adhesive being forced below that rubber strip when I try to get the lower part of the window. It's dark, I'm tired, and it's good enough to get a pig...cop...to sign off on the ticket tomorrow after work, so I'm calling it a night. Besides amonia (which I've heard works, but I am absolutely not working with) is there an easy way to remove this stuff?

Windex and a razor blade..

Windex helps eat at the glue and puts a protective barrier on the window so you are less likely to scratch it.

I should make a how to on this, but ammonia is the only thing i know of that actaully works...

What you really need to strip a car.

Blue Windex
White scrub pads(3m or scotchbrite) White only, other colors will damage the glass.
Paper towels
Razor blades and a blade holder, like a scraper that the blade sets in
Black trashbag
Steamer(optional) i never use them any more

First off do not scrape your rear window defrosters or they will not work anymore....

If you already ripped the tint off the rear glass happy scrubbing, if not here's a trick..

Take a large plastic trash bag, using a razorblade or scizzors, cut the bottom out and one side off, now lay the cut trashbag on the outside of the rear window and cut the bag to the approximate shape of your rear glass, meaning the exposed peice of glass on the inside. (note, use a sharp blade and don't press to hard or you could scratch your glass)

Now you should have a plastic bag cut into the shape of your rear window.
Get into the rear of the car and SOAK the rear window with windex, now stick the bag over the windex so that it won't evaporate. Now you wait. This can take several hours to work, but the end result is worth it. If you can ,park the vehicle out in direct sunlight for a few hours, if not wait as long as possible before attempting to peel. Once the ammonia soaks into thetint, it will break down the glue, and WHALLA, the tint AND it's glue will peel off the glass with NO or VERY LITTLE glue residue left behind.

For the sides, the only way to get the tint off right is to remove the bottom window rubrail. That is easy on the balt, all you hav e to do is take out the screw behind the inside door handle, then roll the window down, grab the top of the door panel and rock it back, like up and off of the rubrail, then just pull the rubrail out. Then just pick at the tint and peel it off
Now go to town on the left over glue with your scrub pads, razor scraper, windex and paper towels.

As i said before if you ripped the tint off the rear, you can't srape it, so just spray it with windex, let it soak for a second then scrub it and wipe it.

You can also safley use 0000 steelwool to remove trace amounts of the glue...If you have access to a steamer, they work ok also.

8 times in five years. ticketed 4 of the 8. I'd say it's worth it, but with the economy like it is, it no longer IS worth it.

b_faulk, I'm only doing the sides, but the instructions on rubrail removal are exactly what I needed. Thanks!

Now to only get up the motivation. Took the tint off yesterday, got the ticket signed off on an hr ago. The glue is still all over the window...but I don't think I wanna do it today lol...maybe I'll do it sunday...

For the last 5 years I've been driving, it's never been a secondary violation in michigan.

Just updating my tint status... It took me about 1.5 hours to do the driver and passenger side window. I used a hair dryer, steamer, a flat edge razor and Windex. The tint came off pretty easily, and so did the residue once soaked with Windex. It was just a bitch to get it all off, it was so gooey.
