Retro question

When doing a retro do you have to use a projector designed for hids or will a quality halogen projector work with an hid kit?
For reference, these are what I'm looking at:
http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=128

they also have these hid ones but if I don't have to spend 3x as much I don't want to

those aren't bi-xenon, you would have to have separate high and low beam assemblies.

If you want a single projector, and both high and low beams, look on e-bay, for something out of a BMW or Audi.

I have Bi-Xenon Audi projectors in my retrofits, and trust me, you will love having the stock-like ability to switch between hi and low beams.

using a halogen projector defeats the purpose of doing a retro even if its a low beam module

I have gen 2s so i want just the low. The issue with aftermarket projectors is that they have a terrible beam pattern. Blotchy, hot spots, etc. So here again is my original question...is a quality halogen projector as good as an hid projector? Is there really any difference. Our G8 has halogen projectors and they have a perfect beam pattern. Very even. So if you can get a halogen projector(such as the one I posted) and an aftermarket hid kit for cheaper, is it just as good as an oem hid projector setup?

Some of the halogen projectors could be just as good as some of the oem HID projectors, but it all depends on what projector. There are some oem HID projectors like the Acura TL with ZKW lense or the Infiniti FX with a clear lense swap which will never compare to a halogen projector because they are ten times better. If you could fit a set of Acura TSX low beam projectors with clear lense in there, that would be one of the best options and you would be a lot happier than with the halogen. Either way what you plan will be better than the cheap projectors that come in the gen 2 projectors.

Cool cool. Thanks. Time for some more research.

Why do you want a H7 specifically?

Here are some...they would obviously need to be cut to fit.

Also I think the 07/08 A4 uses a H7

i have H7 HID kit and if im gonna need to purchase a projecto might as well save the money on the bulb. i modified the cutoff already as it is, but it sucks, much better then stock 2nd gen, has somewhat of a cutoff but a scattered light pattern on the ground

If you are looking for a halogen H7 you can look on ebay for a valeo H7 projector, they are pretty good for a halogen. You are not going to find a factory HID projector that uses an H7, most are D2S. The valeo's came in some audi's and mercedes. I think that the valeo's are only for high beam though. Both of you guys should check www.HIDPlanet.com/forums and look on there in the for sale section. They also have a lot of good info on there. If you check this link they have adapters that will connect into your HID kit and then you just need the D2S bubls to use a much better projector.

I bet someone would buy the bulbs

Do you know if there are any melting issues if you put 55w in the gen2s?

I honestly would not recommend putting 55w in the gen2's. You are going to burn the bowls on the projectors. Even some of the oem HID projectors can not take 55w. The Acura TL because of it's size can as well as the new FX-R projector from theretrofitsource they guarantee can handle it.

I have heard of people doing it but not sure how the chrome on the bowl would hold up. Maybe check www.HIDPlanet.com/forums and try searching for the info. From what I was able to find as long as you use a OEM bulb like the phillips 85122+ then you will be ok. Apparently the aftermarket HID bulbs heat up way too much and will damage the chrome of the bowl on the TSX's.
