Steering Wheel Swap?

This is an odd question but I get curious everytime I look into a Cobalt window and see one of the 3-spokers... (they're so sexy...)

1. Is it possible to switch out the 4-spoke wheel for the 3-spoke wheel? I think it would either be a yes or no. (I dont care about audio controls because i have an ls, but I dont see that as mattering in this case?)

2. Where would you get one? Thats also a problem. They have them for 100 on ebay, nice and legit... but of course no airbaggies. I was thinking if anything Id sell my wheel/airbag for a buttload on ebay to make the money back but... I was wondering if there was anywhere else?

I dunno, odd question I couldnt find the answer to. I would totally do it, and Im surprised nobody else hasnt (or at least said anything)

Ha yeah if only it was as easy as trading it. Well it would be if I had audio controls. Nobody would want to give that up heheh understandably.

Yeah anyway I dont know Im hoping someone knows for sure if its possible...

i dont think you would get that much for your steering wheel. my only question is..... how would you clear your oil light(without going to a dealer) if you dont have the controls considering it uses to info and return buttons to do so.....

nrg innovations makes a nice setup.hubs about 100(for a non quick release, but you will need this even with a quick release.) and about 119 for a nice wheel. quick releases are extra 150.

No the airbag would really be my primary money maker. Thats my prob with ebay. The steering wheels are dirt cheap but airbags are ridiculous!

And I dont know how the Info and Return buttons have to do with your steering wheel...? I guess its on the wheel on the new models (or the expensive ones), but in my 06 ls its on the dash to the left of the radio.

And about those NRG wheels. Of course those are sexy, but they have no airbags which is illegal AND insanely stupid/dangerous.

i wouldnt say its neccisarily stupid..... one of my friends was killed due to the air bag after his accident. investigation went on your about a year. its one of those things that will save your life or kill you. honestly i do not need one due to the fact the car will have a full cage and harness's in it before spring. but yeah i own an 09 sstc so its all on the steering wheel.

Having harnesses and all the works is a better excuse for sure, and Ive heard the airbag horror stories - but for me in this case, the safest thing to do seems to be the legal one.

So clearly an 07+ wont fit, but there's a lot of 06 three-spokers on ebay that just say "06 cobalt." hmm I guess we'll never know

you dont have to go to the dealer to have it reset. turn the key to "RUN" and press the gas pedal all the way to the floor 3 times. oil life will return to 100%

Assuming the hubs are the same and the airbag plugs are the same, an 07+ wheel should fit on an 05-06 column. I am not speaking from experience here, just guessing. Since you don't care about audio controls, having the controls on the wheel is a moot point, same as the controls for the DIC on the wheel which would not be used. I would probably try to find some wheels and examine them closely to see if they look swappable, if not then I guess you're out of luck.

You CAN put a 3 spoke wheel on an 05-06 car, its been discussed before, but I am sure it was hard to find withouth a search feature........oh wait.......nvm

You need the steering wheel, and a 2007 airbag. If you get a 2008-newer airbag youll also need the SIR coil assembly.

Yeah dude search "steering wheel" and see if you get a topic specifically about swapping a steering wheel, hahaha yeah.... a little more comes up. My post level is low but Im not an idiot, I searched for a half hour -here alone- and came up with nothing.

And adding words such as "swap" and "switch" didnt help either.

But thank you for confirming that, and everyone else with further details. The old topic would help as well but I basically have all of the info I need. If I find an airbag for less than 400 dollars (OMG) then I may just do this.
Actually i may buy the 3 spoke for 100 and keep it - till I find a good deal on an airbag/sell my wheel+bag. Well thats details details details

well you know you could always change out your steering wheel and take the control buttons oout of the existing wheel and mount them into say the trim of the dash, that way you still have them if you wanted to use em. dont think anybodys ever done that before, but its just an idea iwas toying with

thats an idea ive been toying with. i bought a navi unit so i need the steering wheel control interface.....well i want an aftermarket steering wheel so i dont think doing a little cutting soldering and heat shrink wraping the wires would be to bad.... maybe purring them in the glove box since i dont use them that often.

Any ideas on if it is theoretically possible to do some rewiring to make the Cruise buttons work on the 07+ wheel for an 05? I don't have access to the 05/06 wiring diagram to see if the clock spring pinouts are similiar enough to make cruise and even the 07+ steering controls work if I would hack the 07 stereo in. I'd imagine cruise can be made to work since all years use Pin 61 in the BCM, but I'm not sure if the clock spring's part is vastly different.

The biggest things I miss from my 07 G5 is the steering wheel (My hands don't fit very well on the 4 spoke... I cannot hold it nearly as well.) and the HU.

Replacing the steering wheel is not that bad. I installed a momo steering wheel and relocated the cruise and other buttons to the small glove box on the left. this car is used for racing it has a roll cage, racing seat, fire system and 6 point belts.
