Sunroof Exploded!
Sunroof Exploded!
Well, I was on my way home from work yesterday. It was nice enough outside to have my sunroof open and I was just cruising along. Suddenly I catch in the corner of my eye something hurtling off of a semi that was flying by. A few milli-seconds later I hear this awful shattering sound and lo and behold my sunroof has just shattered into a thousand pieces...
I couldn't stop as the road I was too busy but when I got home I got to take in all of the damage. Anyway, long story short, it's going to cost me about $620 to get it replaced. I wish I could have got information off of the truck that the rock came off of.
Definitely not an expense I was planning on!!!

something similar happened to another person on here, something fell off of a semi and shattered their sunroof just a month ago
Wow, I haven't been around for a while so I didn't hear about that. This whole experience has made me think twice about getting a sunroof in the future. I've always loved them but I've never had this kind of experience. Makes me question just how safe it is to have a sunroof overhead instead of steel...

sunroof is nice but i prefer a strict coupe, imagine if u flip it
This is the second open and shattered sunroof I have see on here. The other was a guy that someone threw something out of there sunroof and hit his. That sucks man, sorry to hear.
sux that happened, I try and stay away from rigs as much as humanly possible just for reasons such as that.....and when one of their tires blow out, it's a friggin' explosion. we've had 2 do that at work just this week.
I just claimed a hit and run on my insurance and its coverd under my uninsured motorist coverage. Didn't raise my rates at all. I'd give them a call and see what they can do...
$500 is really high for comprehensive coverage and compre. claims should not increase your premiums. I got $300 deductable (can get $100)for comp. and its only $177/year after discount.
Well, I spent a little bit of time yesterday figuring out how to take off the shattered sunroof and in the process discovered that it would take me almost no time to install a new one. Basically there are six T-20 torx screws holding the glass to the levers that lift it.
Knowing that it will only cost me the price of the glass which is around $330 bucks. Much better than what I was originally quoted.
Oh, and I'll post up a few pics when I have a chance.

Your insurance rates wouldnt go up, its covered.... Call your agent so they can check- generally its covered under comprehensive damage....
it is covered as he said, under comp, but he got the $500 deductible for comp,,,, oops
I made this mistake once too, had a small tree fall and smash my fender,,, luckily I worked at a dealership
and they helped keep the costs down as much as possible.
But I learned my lesson, $100 comp is only a couple more bucks a month and well worth it
To the OP
DIY for the win man.. if you can get away for only a few hundred bucks that's awesome.
Get the new glass in and call up your ins company about that comp. coverage ASAP,

Okay, so this story has an ending. My dad was able to get a good deal for me on the glass and it took us less than 30 minutes to install and align the new sunroof. I actually think that the new one seals a little better than the older unit. There seems to be a bit less road noise when the sunroof is closed but the inside liner is open.
All in all, this was one of the easiest things I have even installed in a car in my life. Funny how the original company I spoke with wanted to charge me four hours (two glass techs for two hours) for a job that took two sunroof newbies less than 30 minutes.
So in total, instead of $650, it cost me approximately $280 CND.
